Jake decoy beard
« on: April 17, 2013, 08:50:00 PM »
I got a new jake decoy in the mail today. Opened the box and the beard was missing, just a hole in the chest.I thought about using some frayed rope or yarn to make a beard, but then figured what the heck,it's time to shave for the summer anyway. Now I'm clean shaven and my decoy has a real beard. My wife says there's something wrong with me,LOL. I say good thinkin'.

Look inside the decoy if possible.

That's good stuff...but from what I've read, the beard has no bearing on the viability of a mating male...in other words, it's pretty much ignored, as up to 20 per cent of hens can have a beard and still breed.  More important is the weight, size of spurs, and fighting spirit of the gobbler in question.  All that said...really cool way to put the beard on your jake.

Looks great.  I think the beard on those DSDs are a bit ling anyway.  I think beard length can make a difference if yo have a subordidnate gobbler come in.
The season gave him perfect mornings, hunter's moons and fields of freedom found only by walking them with a predator's stride.

Looks good...rubber cat whiskers make good beards as well. I sewed one into an old Feather -Flex about 15yrs ago.

Nice. . mine is white also, so unless I make an albino turk. . . hey !  would that be cool !  an albino turkey decoy !  gotta try it.

Since it is different, I wonder if it would incite the other males to come kick its butt ?

I think that I got the same decoy as you from cabelas.  It came with a hole, but no beard.  Sent it back and they sent a replacement that arrived today.  The beard is very small and looks like nothing but a set of rubber cat whiskers.
