Hoyt Buffalo or Excell
« on: May 01, 2013, 07:09:00 AM »
Going to get a new hunting rig for chasing treestand Whitetails and a September 10 day elk hunt. Might want 2 sets of limbs, one heavier for elk. In your opinion, which one is a better hunting bow.

Never shot either, but,

Buffalo can accept hoyt F2 F3 or F4 formula limbs.

Obviously Excel is ILF. You will have more limb options with the Excel, and probably alot more limb options in a reasonable price range.

Buffalo is 60" with the short limbs, 62" with medium limbs, and if you fit long Formula limbs you can get 64".

Excel 21" riser makes a 62"(short) 64" (medium), or a 66" (long) bow.

What's your draw length? a long draw might do better with the Buffalo at a given bow length cause you'll have more limb and less riser.

If you wanna hunt form a blind with it, shorter is probably better ... might go Buffalo.

Personally I'd go Excel, for the price of a buffalo you can get an excel riser and two sets of blackmax carbon/wood limbs.

I don't if you're into rifles at all but my arguement for ILF is the same as for using common rifle calibers. If you're out on a trip away from your stomping grounds, would you rather have to find 30-06 ammo in a pinch or .30-338 magnum wildcat rounds? Same goes for ILF vs Formula. If it really came down to it, and you had to get limbs short notice, you're alot more likely to find some ILF limbs in the local shop than some formula limbs,

Peter,
I can't speak for the others, but I have two of the Buffalos and they shoot great. Both mine are 60", short version, and I have a 29.50 " draw length. Just my two cents.

I just got an Excel, and so far I like it a lot.  It is a bit top heavy though, so I have to use a stabilizer to get it to balance where I want.

The Excel can really save you some $$$$$ with that said the better bow is the one you shoot the best.

My draw length is 29". I appreciate saving some $ but willing to invest in the best bow evenif it costs a little more.

For the money, competitor limbs are better than Hoyt at a given price point,so ILF would be the choice for me if you are interested in getting the best limbs.Lots of hunting ILF risers available besides the very long Excel for hunting purposes. Morrison, Dryad, Sky,etc.
I shoot a Dryad Epic15 myself and medium Carbon limbs for a 58" bow for my 29" draw length.

I've got an excel riser and winex limbs and love it and it didn't break the bank.  Never shot a buffalo or dorado or gamemaster.

I've seen a handful of buffs for sale lately, you should be able to get one at a fair price. If buying new, tough to beat the excel price. As mentioned the Sky and Titan are also good shooters.
I'm not a "deer" hunter, I'm a bow hunter that occasionally shoots a deer.

You need to quickly inform our Olympic Team USA they are using inferior limbs.

Most of the US Olympic team is sponsored by Hoyt, do you think they have a choice? The US is but a fraction of the world's elite archers, although the F7 limbs have proven its performance capabilities, other offerings from Hoyt have proven inferior given the same "price point" as other competitor limbs from the numerous review in another Olympic style archery forum.
I was an avid Hoyt user before, and used a Radian and carbon plus limbs to shoot my best personal FITA at the '95 WAC and have just renewed interest competing in FITA mathces.
