Field point weights......help please
« on: May 06, 2013, 12:08:00 AM »
I am wondering what weight point I should be shooting, or what range I should try. I'm shoot a 47@28 recurve with full length GT Trad 35/55's. I will be setting brace height and nock this week and get back into shooting after a bit of a break due to moving back to MT and having our second child. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks all!

P.s since you're reading this anyway, one more plug to check your closets for anything you can post for the St. Judes auction......I know I am this week!

With arrows in that spine range for target practice I would start with some 125 grain field points.

My son shoots a Predator recurve almost exactly at that draw, and is shooting the 35-55 Gold Tip trads, full length, with 175 grain heads.....PERFECT holes thru paper!

He can shoot everything from 125, up to 250 grains with great results with the same set-up

When you say you're shooting full-length GT shafts, does that mean you're drawing more than 28"?  For example, if you're drawing 29" and shooting a full length 30" shaft, that 47# bow suddenly becomes a 49-50# bow, and because of the length of your arrows, it's possible that a 5575 might work better than a 3555.

I pull 28" and I cut my arrows to 29".  I think that's a matter of personal preference.  Cutting the arrows down stiffens them, which means you would need a heavier point.  Target archers might want the longer length so they could use a lighter point and get a faster arrow.  Hunters might want a heavier point for better penetration.  With a 28" draw, you should be fine with a 3555 either way.

My GT 3555s are cut to 30" and I shoot 175 grain points and heads.
Take care,
Jeff

Personally I like full length shafts. I think 125's will get you started. occasionally I will mmmmmisss the target and mushroom the end of the arrow. I cut the arrow back an inch or so and reglue the insert. Throw on a 145 or 175 and get new life from the arrow. I couldn't do that if I cut them down. Good luck and God bless on your journey.

What weight broadhead do you plan on shooting?  Pick a field point to match and the get your arrows flying good by cutting them down and/or adding weight.

at full length you should be shooting 125 grains field points on a bow of that draw weight if it's cut to center or very near to center.
