Cow call or bugle?  I've had really good luck with the Primos hyper lip single for cow calls also like the Sceary estrous cow and the Carlton hyper hot.  The Hoochie momma from Primos is also nice sounding but your kind of limited to one tone, you can't  CRANK it up to much when you need to sound excited.  As far as bugles my friend loves his Abe & son, I find it takes a little while to get it tuned.  I use the Primos bugles and get real nice sounds out of them.  Quick tip with the Primos as you come to the end of your bugle let off lip pressure some to get that deep sound before a chuckle.  Good luck Joe

Best bugle by far is a mouth diaphram and a grunt tube combo, although it is also the hardest to learn.  The type with the reed that stretches over the tube are OK, but to me not as realistic as the mouth diaphram. Not sure what the elk think.

JoeM's cow call advice is spot on.

If you don"t have one by now,  leave the bugle alone this year.  If you must buy one,  buy a bunch and find out what works best for you quick.  For me the primos pack bugle works best.

Bugling Bull... I order mine fron ElkNut Productions. They sell some really good elk calls, I use the Monarch Custom, which has been slightly modified by ElkNut.

Like Whip said.... The mouth diaphragm and grunt tube is the best thing going.....But if you're just starting now it's too late for this season... Terry

Where you hunting? Deep wilderness? Otherwise, bugling is generally poison ... not only to your own hunt, but to everyone else's too. "Bugle pollution" we call it ... too many new elk hunters who've watched too many videos made by folks selling bugles and "hunting" on private land and worse. Early '80s, it was magic. Now, it's mostly poison. Exceptions only prove the rule. Don't bugle at all. Cow call only sparingly and know why and when you do. Forget the "hyper" stuff and go for the "all is OK" very modest coalesence calls ... soft, quiet, brief mews. Honest and long-experienced advice, offered with best intent. Whatever. Dave

I also have one of Elknut's customized Bugeling Bulls Monarch bugles.... AWESOME! It is so easy to use, it's rediculous.... LOUD LOUD LOUD and has fantastic tone and bass. It makes my Primos Bull Horn sound like a joke... no kidding. I'm giving the Bull Horn to another hunter in our group this year.
