KUIU guide jacket?
« on: May 16, 2013, 09:11:00 PM »
Ive been thinking about buying one and was wanting to ask you folks that have the if it might be too noisy for point blank whitetails from treestands and ground hunting? I know its not wool or fleece but is it a passable fabric for these applications?

                      Thanks,Izzy

It has some slight noise to it, but nothing that is insanely loud. I have a VIAS and Olive. I use the olive for work wore it all winter. Wish it had a little more insulation of some sort for the price. It alone is a light weight jacket.

Thanks,
Boswell

Iz, I've killed multiple deer and hogs wearing mine at Solana....and you know how "they" are    :scared:

Also here in NY I've never had a deer spook from anything that had anything to do with noise from my gear.

Im liking that olive for work and all around wear but Id like to be able to hunt it.  Im a fan of multi purpose clothes, from the street to the woods at times or vice versa. Thanks fellas.

Izzy I don't have the jacket but have the vest in brown. I use it hunting and at church. Looks and is functional both ways. I think the olive would look good too! It's my favorite piece of clothing!

I bought one for my son-from a noise perspective I gotta' say it is pretty darned good. Make sure it will fit however the cut is for a 'long and lean' body type. If you are short and squat you won't be happy!    :bigsmyl:

Iv had no problems with mine on the noise front plenty quiet. I used mine most of last whitetail season and killed a buck and doe from the stand and a doe from the ground. Really like it. I have the original Vias and the new DCS in Verde.

The KUIU gear was designed for mountain hunting but it works great for many applications.  It also kept me plenty warm when worn with the spindrift insulation layer.

I have 3 Guide Jackets(Vias,Olive for work, and now Verde).  While they are not wool-quiet garments, I found them to be satisfactory for traditional-range bowhunting out of a treestand and love the Vias pattern for treestand work.  They do get quieter with each wash.  I've washed mine about 6 times and now with zero fading.  The jackets are very functional with good pockets, zippers and a great hood. The pit zips allow for excellent ventilation you are active to prevent heat build up.

It is a fairly quiet garment, but not as quiet as some of the other materials.

If you are wanting it for warmth, and weight is not a factor, there are a lot of other materials that work better.  For active mountain hunting it is hard to beat.  I put it in the category of an advanced wind breaker.  Mine performed as designed and advertised while on an Alaskan moose hunt and while helping my friend on his sheep hunt last fall.  However, I go back to my wool and fleece when in a treestand and the weather turns cold.  One other thing, they should make the hood detachable, or at least roll up into the collar, ìt can be distracting at times.
The broadhead used, regardless of how sharp, is nowhere as important as being able to place it in the correct spot.

I have Vias, brown and olive, and I like all three. I agree with almost all of the comments here. Hoods are funny things -- when you want them, they are great, when you don't want them, they get in the way (or flap in the wind, or ...). The Guide wear is not designed to be particularly warm, which is why you will need some insulating layering, like Primaloft or down, both of which Kuiu sells and recommends. Other products are probably better in really cold weather on a treestand, where I tend to get VERY cold when the wind is blowing and I'm unable to move around.
