Javelina and Hog hunting 2014
« on: May 18, 2013, 01:15:00 PM »
Mule Creek Outfitting is pleased to have been a sponsor here for 4 years now.  We are now booking hunts on our west Texas leases for 2014. We will have hog and Javelina hunting available from January 12 through Feb 28.  (Javy season closed after 2/25/2014) We limit our hunting to bowhunters only.  Hunting dates will fall from Saturday through Thursday each week, 5 day hunts.

We can accomodate groups of up to 16 hunters at a time.  We now have over 125 square miles to hunt. These ranches will not be overhunted and you will not be crowded. We ran over 35 feeders and bait sites this year on 60,000 acres. We use trail cameras on several of the baits every day to give us an idea of what is coming in and when.  We provide you a bunk to sleep in, a hot shower, indoor toilet and prebaited hunting areas.  Freezer space is available to get your meat cold for the trip home, plenty of running water at the paved cleaning station with flood lights, gambrels, ropes, pulleys and a scale onsite.   5 day hunts.  You are responsible for your own meals and kitchen facilities are provided as long as you clean up after yourself.

You need to bring your sleeping bag/pillow, bow, clothes and a cooler to put your meat in.  A nonresident Texas hunting license is required for non residents, available at most sporting goods dealers (such as Walmart)for a fee of $48.00.  This license is good for 5 days.

Book 8 hunters or more and we will close the camp so you can have it to yourselves.

If you want to give Javy and hog hunting a try, this is as good an opportunity at free range feral hogs as you will find, with Javelina and coyotes as a bonus.  Several coyotes have been taken on hunts at this ranch.  Plenty of space, plenty of animals, and clean facilities.  This is not a 5 star lodging type operation.  If you are looking for the deluxe catered hunting lodge or high fence hunt, we are not it, and you need to keep looking.  We will show you around so you can get to your hunting areas and you will then be responsible for getting to and from your daily hunts.  Guiding, skinning, tracking, transportation or other services are not included in your rate.  Consider this as a do it yourself, self guided hunting opportunity with some assistance.

Shaun's mighty hog tracking teckle posing with a find.  She thinks this is her hog.  This spotted boar weighed 200 pounds.

A happy hunter with the daily double.

Our hog cleaning station has a covered roof, concrete floor, running water, scales, floodlights etc.  This was one of the biggest hogs for the 2012 year.  280 pound sow, covered with a thick pad of fat.  The drought was severe for the past 2 years but the hogs still find a way to make a good living in the mesquite thickets.

This old oilfield shop building has been converted to be our Headquarters.  We do not have to worry about being too cold or having our camp blow away in the west Texas windstorms.  We have a plug and spigot for hooking up an RV if you want to bring your own.

Kitchen facilities are rather spartan but clean.

A hot shower, indoor toilet and heated building makes your stay a little less tiring than on a camping hunt.  You do need to bring your own towel.

Great room seating.  Heated space available on cold nights.

2 bunk rooms available.    3 bunk beds per room.  Bring a pillow, sleeping bag and a towel (if you intend to shower)

Typical watertank windmill setup with overflow pond. (Woodies Windmill) Hogs have to drink every day and this is a good place to find them.

View of the pitblind at my favorite waterhole, the cattle pens. (I have been hunting this waterhole for years and always have some action here)

View from the pit, looking across the waterhole.  Shots are close, usually less than 15 yards across the waterhole.  We like to put a little corn in the water at the edge of the pond.  The hogs can smell the corn in the water and will blow bubbles sucking it up off the bottom.

another pit.  has everything but a cup holder.

We have lots of little piggies running around and a lot of pregnant sows.  There will be an abundance of hogs for next year.  We didn't put much of a dent in them.

Ever wonder how a hog that stands 2 ft tall at the shoulder can drink out of a tank that is 3 ft. tall?

These guys just make me want to laugh.  Real posers.

more hogs

We have a lot of hogs.

Javelinas really seem to know when the camera goes off.

We keep some blood tracking dogs in camp.  Shaun Webb brings his teckle and I have some Jagdterriers.

In front is Mad Molly, middle is Vader and Mojo on the right.

Mojo pics below

Moj will be two years old in September.  She is the most laid back of the three and is a house dog.  Good nose and likes to hunt but good manners too.

Mad Molly below

Molly is from the Cumberland Pack, out of Richard McCorkle's legendary dog Laser.  Mostly recent European breeding.  She has the long rough coat, kind of like an airdale.   Good armour for dogs that like to mix it up but not so good for hot humid Iowa summers. Molly is only 12 months old.

Vader

Vader is a first generation Austrian Import.  His mother was bred in Europe and delivered her pups stateside.  He is a year and a half, old world go to ground breeding, only weighs about 14 pounds.  He is kind of ill tempered and has some dog/dog agression especially with other males.  He is like a Tasmanian devil on the fight.  If he were any bigger he could be a problem.

You might think we have a thing for black and tans.  We do.  This is our Black and Tan Coon hound "Boss"

We started Mojo on coon hunting last fall before we went to Texas and she was coming along hunting with the big dogs.  She worked some long tracks last year, over a mile and a half in some cases.  When you jump a wounded hog that has gone that far and keeps going, the hog hasn't been hit well enough.  I firmly believe that if the hog is dead, we will be able to find it.

The Jagdterrier has a phenomenal nose and a prey drive that is unsurpassed by any other breed.  They are fearless combatants and just don't seem to have any reverse to them.  I am looking forward to starting these Jagds on live hogs as bay dogs next year and getting a big catch dog to help them out.

We will be planning a litter or two next spring.

Izzy,

You will be much better off to rent an economy car for a few days.  There are good roads to most parts of the ranch, roads maintained by the oil companies.  The bunkhouse is on the northwest corner of the ranch.   You would be able to hunt at a couple of waterholes within a walking distance but you would be shortchanging yourself.  A lot of guys go to the county seat in Crane Texas, for a Sonic burger, ice cream,  Mexican food, Tecate, groceries, gas etc.  Crane is on the other side of the ranch about 20 miles away, all the same ranch.  We will help you get around some by dropping you off when we run baits and pick you up but that would be a limited service.  If you could share the cost of a rental with a buddy you would surely find it money well spent.  We have had some tradgang hunters most weeks that we do not have some family group booking the whole place, and we would help you make contact with any Tradgang members that give us permission to do so.

I had an inquiry today about youth hunting.  Below is the regulation for hunting age in Texas.

In addition to obtaining a license, Texas requires all hunters, residents and visitors born after Sept. 2, 1971, to complete a hunter education training course. You can take the course via a two-day field class or a combo of online training and one-day field course. Youths and adults must buy hunting licenses. Seniors over 65 can purchase a discount hunting license. Young residents and nonresidents under age 16 must purchase a youth hunting license.

Who is required to take Texas Hunter Education?
Every hunter (including out-of-state hunters) born on or after Sept. 2, 1971, must successfully complete a Hunter Education Training Course. Minimum age of certification is 9 years of age.
If you were born on or after September 2, 1971 and you are:
·   under 9 years of age, you must be accompanied*.
·   age 9 through 16, you must successfully complete a hunter education course, or you must be accompanied*.
·   age 17 and over, you must successfully complete a hunter education course; or purchase a “Hunter Education Deferral” and you must be accompanied*.
Please note that some federally controlled areas require all hunters using that site to have hunter education certification. In Texas, this includes Corps of Engineers property and most military reservations. Be sure to check with the specific area prior to going hunting.
Hunter Education Deferral (cost: $10) Allows a person 17 years of age or older who has not completed a hunter education program to defer completion for up to one year. A deferral may only be obtained once and is only valid until the end of the current license year. A person who has been convicted or has received deferred adjudication for violation of the mandatory hunter education requirement is prohibited from applying for a deferral. Take the course by August 31 of the current license year and receive a $5 discount. The one-time Hunter Education Deferral is available at license vendors and went into effect September 1, 2004.
* Accompanied means:  By a person who is at least 17, who is licensed to hunt in Texas, who has passed hunter education or is exempt (born before Sept. 2, 1971), and you must be within normal voice control. Proof of certification or deferral is required to be on your person while hunting. Note: Certification is not required to purchase a hunting license.

Only the archery and crossbow equipment prescribed in this section may be used for taking game animals or game birds. Archery and crossbow equipment may not be used to hunt deer during the Muzzleloader-Only Deer Season. An upper-limb disability is a permanent loss of the use of fingers, hand, or arm in a manner that renders the person incapable of using a longbow, compound bow, or recurved bow.
Any person, regardless of physical ability, may use a crossbow to hunt game animals or game birds in any county, including Collin, Dallas, Grayson and Rockwall counties, during a general open season or Eastern spring turkey season.
An archery stamp endorsement is required to hunt deer during the Archery-Only Open Season. An archery stamp endorsement is required to hunt deer at any time in Collin, Dallas, Grayson and Rockwall counties, including during the general open season.
A crossbow is lawful for game animals and game birds, provided:
the crossbow has a minimum pull of 125 pounds;
