Gear question for Western hunters
« on: May 20, 2013, 05:12:00 PM »
As most of you likely know I will be moving to Montana before too long. The question I have is in regards to clothing-First Lite in Asat pattern, or KUIU. I will chase after elk, but my main focus will be high country muleys. I think I prefer the ASAT pattern but have heard very good things about VIAS as well. I will only be able to make this purchase once, has anybody used both of these and have a preference? I would be going with the FL Kanab pants, Llano as base layer on top then the Springer Vest if necessary (also may go with their boxers for heat regulation) If I went with KUIU would be-Guide pants, Merino 230 Zip t and 185 bottom, Guide Vest if necessary. Unfortunately there isn't anywhere that I can try both of them on or I would go that route. I will work on rain gear later.

I have used both yes and I can say without a doubt I would go with KUIU.

While I haven't used all of the exact pieces, I have used Kuiu and First lite and while they are both great gear I prefer Kuiu. I've had several tearing issues with First liteincludong their boxers separating at the elastic band seam the first time I put them on.

As far as camo I don't get to concerned with it, keep the wind right and be stealthy and I think any will work. Early welcome to MT and good luck chasing mulies!

I bought a Kuiu outfit for my son-seems excellent. Not familiar with the other co. you mentioned, and don't get hung up on evaluating camo patterns.

You can buy firstlite at a substantial discount at camofire if you go that route.

What do you guys go with for early season mule deer hunting (warm weather!) in the KUIU line? With as much as FL costs, I really don't want to have to deal with quality issues right off the gate.

KUIU just came out with some warm weather stuff. Looks intriguing. I layer. I use thin stuff early and two or three layers late topped off with a vest. Don't make it complicated bud  ;)

That's what I was thinking, their Tiburon line. Would be a nice fly fishing jacket on those warm days on the river as well.
