Land Lease

I'm about to pull the trigger on a hunting land lease with three other guys and was wondering how many guys/gals here do the same? Seems like things are going this way for hunting land, at least that is how it is here in IL.

Yea I done the same thing in the past, for quiet a few years. That seems to be the best way to find some good hunting ground. And the only way we could afford it was to pool our money together. Really got to high for our blood though, and a few land owner dying off, or selling their farms. Hope you the best. God bless.

Unless you own the land (or are real close buds with someone who does own land) that is the only way to find hunting ground down here in TX.

I'm in on a lease with 4 other guys.  We have a little over 1300 acres.  It has a fair deer population.  But excellent turkey numbers and good bear numbers.

Its nice to have land to hunt that you don't have to worry about hunting around strangers.

Yep, kind of..I bought my place last winter.  It ain't huge, but its my land.  At least I'll always have a place to go (and TOO MANY projects to do)

Ryan. . I find myself in the same boat, especially the part about the projects.  Not a lot and not much, but it is mine.

Eventually I will even get to hunt on it !

I lease 80 acres 2 miles from my house.  Have had it for about 10 years  It's a great deal.  Not big, but close and cheap.  Havnt hunted it in a couple of years but wont drop it cause a cousin and his kids hunt it and split the fees with Poppa and myself making it crazy affordable.  

 my own 40, my dads 40 And about another 150 or so broken into 2 spots owned by a friend of Poppa make up the rest we have to hunt that is not a paid lease but we have sole hunting rights to it.  We know who is supposed to be there, have few rules (be legal, be safe, have fun), and do it our way.  If you can afford it go for it.

network to landowners post an ad at a feed store - get on a list with timer companies - join clubs and work your way up.
There are LOTS a landowners who would love to work with dependable bowhunters.

I lease several large tracts in 3 counties and private land is the way to go for sure. The best way I have found to find the leases is to visit your counties tax assessors web site. There you will find tax maps with satellite images and all the land owners addresses. I use this mailing info to send well written letters along with hold harmless information and the Georgia law that protects landowners from liability for allowing hunters on their land. This removes their greatest fear (liability) and has opened many doors for me to quality properties for my family and clients.

Last year was the first year since 1989 that I was not in a lease.  Just joined one again this year.  I have been fortunate to have good experiences with good people for the most part.

Leases can be great or terrible

Do your homework: get to know the other hunters, know the hunting/camping rules especially regarding bringing friends or family, know the landowner, does the landowner live on the property, does the landowner's family hunt the property?

I've been lucky and had good lease experiences.

I prefer leasing from owners who live on the property (less trespassing and poaching) and who do not allow their family and friends to hunt without being part of the lease group and following the same lease rules.
