Colorado GMU 61 Anybody?
« on: May 22, 2013, 06:42:00 PM »
May seem kind of funny asking for anybody with any experience in a unit in my own state...but this unit is about ten hours from my place and with my family and work it makes it hard to scout as much as I would like. Any one been there and want to share a little? Appreciate it.

In state get to hunt there every 15 yrs with preference points. I heard it was a great unit. I would hunt the whole season if we were ever fortunate to hunt it.

I went there and scouted for 4 days two years ago in anticipation of drawing the area.  It is very large with a lot of different types of terrain.  We camped on the devide road west end and scouted that area.  Saw a lot of 280 class elk and a couple very nice bulls that were over 300.  Consider the big cannon that goes south from the reservoir,

I assume you are talking elk?  I hunted mule deer there about 5 years ago.  Ran into plenty of good looking elk and would love nothing more than to be able to chase them there.  But that will never happen for me since I didn't have enough points to ever hope to draw it and cashed mine in on unit 76.

Not sure how much help it would be, but I'd be happy to share a starting point for you where I saw good bulls on more than one occasion.  I don't think you are going to have much trouble locating elk though.  Send me a PM if you want and I'll share what I can.

Yes, elk. Sorry bout that. It does take a while...11 points got me in. I have hunted 62 a couple years in anticipation of this but still didn't spend a lot of time in 61. I hear you about the holiday, they have a big atv rally there every year, something like fat eddies rally they call it. Drives the wardens and rangers nuts try to keep the on the trails. Thank you all for your responces, I do appreciate it. Joe I may send a pm when I get my maps together, thank you for the offer.

I drew a 61 Archery Mule Deer this year. I hooked up with Dustin Garvey who Outfits this area. He is going to let me use his Elk Camp and rent me a pickup to do my Mule Deer Hunt on my own.If you want his info let me know.

Good Luck, Randy
