My pasture is just gonna have to wait!
« on: May 31, 2013, 09:11:00 PM »
Its mowing and bush hogging time again, but with the amount of beds im seeing in my pasture, hogging is just gonna have to wait. Seems the Doe's are dropping fawns around here everywhere and I sure dont want to chew one up with the hogg. Ive got some adjacent farmers who have cut down few fawns already on accident, guess my pasture will just have to wait. Call me a softy but a couple more weeks wont matter, I just cant help but give the little fellers a chance.   :campfire:

My neighbor told me he saw a new born stumble across my little field a couple of days ago. About the same time he saw the 350 lb Black
Bear there.    :scared:   I hope he doesn't get the little feller.

You will be doing the quail a favor too if you have any around.  They should be starting to nest.

Great info. Nathan! We do have a few but between the cats and yotes they have taken a beating.
Seems the population of cats and yotes are dwindling.   :dunno:

I'd say good on you, if it can wait and won't hit you in the wallet, I think it's a great idea. The more cover they have, the better.

Bravo for that. My Dad used to have a few acres of yard in PA and I usually mowed a baby bunny or two every summer. That makes you feel pretty crappy.

I was in a supply store a few days ago buying some SS bolts. Guy behind the counter said cut a newborn fawn in half with his bushhog. I thought to myself "why bushhog when fawns are known to be dropping?" But I guess farmers have their reasons. Worse part was my wife was with me and afterwards she told me how much that story and the fact that fawns get killed by unknowing farmers bothered her quite a bit. She ain't too happy I hunt, either.

I've seen several does on the roadside dead and wondered about their newborn fawns too.

Good on you moleman.

And the quail too have suffered. My Brittany loves'em.

I wish all landowners were as caring. Land is a precious, living thing, not just a commodity.

Knawbone made mention of a black bear in same vicinity as a fawn,so I have a question. Will a black bear actually take out a fawn?

Absolutely, They will hunt for them this time of year. I watched a Black Bear run up and down a hedge row trying to unnerve a fawn into running from cover. They will then chase it down.

Yep, and so will a coyote, a bobcat, a hog, and just about any other critter that eats meat.

Thanks folks for the kind comments.
As a land owner I try to look out for the critters that reside here, and it is my pleasure to do so, for even though our wild game is a replenishing resource, it is definitely not one that is endless.
