Poplar shaft tapering.

Has anyone used the sharpening type hand tool on poplar shafts? Do they work well? I hear a lot of good hints about twig archery and was of giving them a try. I was considering Douglas fir but don't have a disk sander.

You dont need a disk sander for doug fir.  The pencil sharpeners work fine.  It'll be a bit rough, but you're gluing a tip or nock over it anyway.

Pencil sharpener types work just fine on Poplar Jake.  Have at it!
