String shortening- bowyers knot?? Makers chime in
«

Ok, so I have a couple spare strings lying around, all in good shape, left overs I kept to use on same length bows as spares/ or from bows I sold/traded. Anyway, I would like to know if it is safe to cut the bottom Flemish twist end off and just use a bowyers knot (timber hitch) to use the string on a shorter bow just to put the strings to good use. I know the knot MUST be done correctly or it will slip. Thoughts?

I of course realize the served part would need to be redone/relocated. The purpose of this inquiry is simply to learn what is possible and or lead in to playing with strings/ materials more, perhaps even do the twist someday.

It would work but would need to be long enough to tie the knot.
Just do what Chubby Checker did....

By the time you get it all done, my guess is it would be easier to just make another string. I give my spares to my wife--she ties up bird feeders, tomato plants, etc. with them.

I have done it, and it's a good way to use a string that doesn't fit. I'd untwist it rather than cut the loop, and salvage more string that way. Easy to cut it off, hard to put it back on.

Would probably have to be re-served as it would be off center then. ????

I'm with scattershot, untwist the bottom loop and then retwist th eend into a rattail. Other than that, it'll work just fine.
My tillering string is like that, one loop and a bowyer's knot. As the bow goes from a long string to a short string I just retie the knot. Once the bow is ready for a dedicated string of its own it's easy to measure the tillering string to see how long to make the new string with its two loops.
