Core wood
« on: June 07, 2013, 09:58:00 PM »
I have a Northern Mist on order and I am not sure of the core wood to get. I really don't want veneers. I hear Bamboo, Red Elm, Osag, Yew. Is there much differance in any of them on a laminated bow?

I don't know what a NM is.......I let the bowyer decide what core wood to use I have had many/most and the design is more important than the core wood.

I would guess: NM = Northern Mist.

If you want something pretty and don't want veneers, walnut is an underrated core wood that looks great under clear glass.

Yew all the way !!! sage is heavy, Yew is light and fast and looks great. Boo or elm would work great but my choice would still be yew.

God bless and good luck, Steve

Though just about any wood will work, I prefer bamboo, particularly in a longbow.

I talked to Steve from Northern Mist today and it looks like it will be all bamboo and clear glass a Bolivian Rosewood handle with a locator grip. Now is the wait untill December when it gets built.

That bow's gonna be a beauty and a shooter Jeff, no doubt.  Nicely done.

I think you made a good choice with the boo. My first choice might have been a yew core though with one bamboo lamination on the back.

I was told Myrtle wood is a favorite of some bowyers.  Easier to work with than bamboo and durable.

I'm a fan of yew and boo like many.  I also love maple- hard rock, curly, or birdseye, all make a fast stable core.

Bamboo is my favorite, but I hear good things about sassafras also.

You should go on Dan Toelke's website and see what he says about bamboo as a core wood. He is in the top 5 or better bowyers in the world.
