Toelke Chinook
« on: June 24, 2013, 03:45:00 PM »
Hello,

I recently placed an order with Mr. Toelke for a Chinook recurve.  The specs are 58", 50# @28".

I am open to suggestions in reference to hunting arrows for it. I was thinking about CE Express Heritage 250, 29 1/2 150 gr point, and 5'' parabolic left wings.

Any thoughts?

Thanks.

Guessing that's gonna be a bit stiff.  I'd go with 150's.

Agreed.  Either 150s or gold tip 3555/5575 with about 175/250 up front.

CE 150 will be the shafting you need. Somewhere near 175 grains should be the correct weight head at ta 28" draw with a shaft cut to 29 1/2". You may need to go to 200 grains however. I would start with 30" shafts and a 175 grain head, then tune from there.
I have tuned shafts to several Chinooks from 55# on down and none have been able to shoot 250 shafts as well as they launched the 150's. The best with 250's was 55# with 100 grain brass inserts and 175 grain heads. Even then the flight was only okay.

Oh my.  I apologize for the misprint. I meant to state 50#, not 45#.

I am such a dork.

I'd go 5575, or 150 if you are set on 150gr. Points.

Still will use the Heritage 150s.  Fairly long and heavy up front also

Frank!!!!!

How's it going?  Customs is delaying the delivery of your Toelke Lynx.   :)

Mr. Toelke called me out of the blue.  I wasn't expecting his call at all.  He asked me about the Lynx, and we decided that 50#s was a lot better for me.  I figured I'd give the Chinook a try and requested Bocote and Micarta riser, and Black Glass limbs.  I can't wait to receive it.

At this point, I'm just trying to decide what's the best arrow shaft, etc., to go with.  Maybe I'll message Mr. Toelke, too.

Let me know when you receive the Lynx.

I find my Chinook likes a stiffer arrow than my whip.  I am not sure why.  My 51 lb whip is about 4 fps slower than my 48lb chinook. I can can use a 225 grain point on my whip but the Chinook needs 175 gr. to tune in.  I think it must have something to do with how the limb accelerates the arrow as it is launched.  I shoot Arrow Dynamic Lites cut to 30" with a 100 grain brass insert and 175 gr head for my Chinook.  Total weighh is 600 gr for the camo AD Lites and 575 gr for the black AD lites.

Your Chinook is the reason I ordered one.  I can't wait to receive mine.  It will be primarily used as a hunting bow.

Thanks for the suggestions.

By all means speak to Dan about this.  I bought a Whip from Dan a couple of years ago and we discussed my draw length vs. the bow weight.  Dan made a suggestion to me (which I did) and the arrow flight was perfect.  Dan not only knows how to make a fine weapon but is a great Engineer.  He will tell you which shaft to buy, length, insert weight and point weight.  He will be "spot on".
