AD Setup for my ........
« on: July 01, 2013, 01:34:00 PM »
Hey all you AD Professionals I have a question ...... I am shooting my  Toelke Curlew , it is a 56" Bow and is 54# @28. I am using CX 250's now, they are 30.5 and I have 250grns at the tip. I'd like to switch to AD's ( made in USA ) but am not sure which one to go with ? Like the idea of the Hammerheads .... So given this what would be a possible setup for me... I believe the Curlew is cut to center ? Thanks, Sutty

Ken,

I answered your pm. For those who are interested. I shoot AD Hammerhead lites out of my 52-55# bows and AD Trads and Hammerheads out of my 62# bow. I draw 29" and my arrows are 30.5" long with a 100 gr brass insert and 250-300 gr points. Works for me.

Ted Fry at Raptor Archery is an excellent source of information on AD's.  He helped me figure out what I needed based on what I wanted to do.
You can find him in the sponsor links.

If you want to keep a similar arrow weight try the regular traditionals with about 250-300 grains up front.

The best thing to do, would be to buy a test kit (3Rivers sells them). That way you can find out which shaft your particular bow likes best. Are you thinking about trying the parallel shafts, or the the tapered shafts? The tapered shafts are slightly larger at the front and smaller at the back. This may effect your dynamic spine requirements. Most .400 spine arrows (cx 250's) spine right around 75 static pounds on average.  This is what I found from a test kit of AD wood grain tapered shafts:
HH lite 56-58# (383gr)
Trad lite 54.25-56.25# (324gr)
HH 76-78# (429gr)
Trad 75-78# (363gr)
These were all bare shaft, and uncut.
Plant a fruit or nut tree today, and have good hunting tomorrow.

I made up some Trad Lites for my 52-57# recurves. I cut them 28.5" long for my 27" draw. I installed nock adapters, 9/32 glue on nocks. 100 grain brass inserts, 35 gr Magnus BHA and with my 125 gr Eskimo, it gives me 255 grains up front.

Total arrow weight is 600 grains. 5" Parabolic feathers, full helical, crown dipped and these arrows fly beautiful out to 40 yds. General rule of thumb with carbon...leave them longer. I don't like 3" of arrow hanging off my shelf.

I know a few people who shoot the Trad Heavies at the same weight as I do. They spine out 55/75, Lites 35/55. For me, they will make a tough stump shooting and small game arrow.

My setup:  AD Trads cut to 29 1/4".  I'm using a 75-grn brass insert.  For my 58# R/D longbow, I'm using 250 grain heads; finished arrow weight about 690 grns.  For my 57# recurve, I'm using 200 grn heads; finished arrow weight about 640 grns.
