Fletched wooden arrow tuning
« on: July 12, 2013, 01:07:00 PM »
I have a new A&H ACS one pc. longbow  62" 53#@28". I have some uncut, Tapered,(11/32-5/16)fletched arrows from Elite arrows. Now , how to tune ? Most of my woodies are shootin waaayy Left?
I seldom shoot woods. Cause I'm not good enough for it to be cost effective. Unless I cant the bow way over. The string hits my left side. Someone told me properly tuned woods will shoot right where I look but, I'm apparently NOT doing something right ..Any help would be appreciated.

The string hitting your bow arm usually sends arrows left (rh shooter).  I would try to solve the string slap first, then work on the tune.

I agree with the above.

sounds like your shafts may also be too stiff...If you're right handed.

when you say "your left side" do you mean your actual side?
As in chest or belly area?

Not string slap. I guess I wasn't clear. When I cant the Bow far enough to get it shoot where I look, the string is up against my left side. I don't like that!

ohhh..I get it.

Yeah sounds like your spine is too stiff.
what spine, tip weight, and draw length are you working with?

I get the same thing (string hitting chest and clothes) and bulky clothes will make it worse. Practice moving your body position and your head with your cant and wear what you are going to wear on your hunt

how far away are you paper testing?

normally about 5 foot is best...too far away and your fletching has already corrected for spine if the spine is close.

I'd say you're too stiff.
Try a little heavier point, see if that pulls them in for you.
3-6" at 25 yds doesn't take much to correct.
I'd bet a 145-150 grain tip would have you in the bull.

You first said the arrows were uncut. Then you later said they are 29" in length...?  I would pick the point weight I wanted to shoot. If it is 100grs then you better start out with one or two of those "uncut" arrows by cutting and point tapering them at 30" bop. Work from there. I think with the 100gr points they are obviously too stiff at 29" bop.

I think he's saying his DL is 29"...not positive though.

The 3 pc is cut 3/16 past. Those woodies will not work for that bow they are seriously weak. You could build out the side plate 3/16 maybe 1/4 but I'd start fresh new wood test kit and you will likely end up at 75/80 or 80/85. I have that bow in 64" and shoot wood only.

Bjorn is giving you some good advice as he shoots an A&H, and has for a number of years.

I have a A&H 3pc 47@28" and I draw about 29", so maybe 50#. I shoot 75 spine with 125gr points. Good luck.

I think they're weak.  A test pack is worth every penny.  I'd try that.  You'll be surprised how high you end up.

Gandalf you are right, 1/8 past and that usually means 5# less than what you need for 3/16.
You have a bunch of ACS bows I noticed, so we should be asking you!  LOL
