I prefer either 4x4" feathers that are moved down the shaft from where cut feathers go in order to keep the ends from poking me in the eyes or 6x3" feathers glued to the shaft in the same place as your normal fletching but with the rearward tail cut perpendicular to the shaft so they don't poke me in the face.
I use them a lot for stump-shooting, squirrel hunting, and rabbit hunting. I like the increased visibility that they offer more than than the drag so I try to build them to be fairly fast shooting for a flu-flu.
For arrows that you want a lot of drag on then using a 4-6 feather spiral is the way to go. That puts a lot of barbs out there bushed up and really slows the arrows down fast.
