Sourcing some one-off custom buffalo horn (?) limb bolts??
« on: July 26, 2013, 06:18:00 PM »
So, if possible, I want to make putting my Habu Vyperkahn 'Jet' together a tool-less affair.

Everyone usually uses the antler type limb bolts on their bows,

The 'Jet' is an all-black bow, being a solid black glass riser and black limbs,

I want to have someone carve/turn some custom decorative limb bolts out of black water buffalo horn to complement the blackout look of the bow...

Who among our sponsors would be up for or worthy of the job?

Suggestions?

What about painting or staining some antler link bolts black??
Might look kinda cool.

http://www.texasknife.com/vcom/advanced_search_result.php?search_in_description=1&keywords=Water+buffalo+horn&x=9&y=8

Try this stuff. It's cheap. For $695 you can get a 5"x3/8" x 1.5" scale. Get a 1.5" hole saw and cut out 2 knobs. Use a 5/8 Forster bit to drill out the back and glue in a limb bolt. Then carve them to your liking. Easy.

Cool!  I am handy enough I could do it, but I usually dislike making things for myself- I'm never satisfied with it.  For me, when it comes to stuff like this, its easier to be happy with something someone else made to my liking.  Just how I am but I could definitely try it?

I'm not sure I would like black antler, but black leather dye will turn just about anything (kitchen counter, hands, clothes) permanently black. If you go this route, I'd thoroughly saturate it with the dye, allow to dry well and then give it a shot of satin spray or wipe on poly.

The surface of antler is very dense, especially those bumps around the burr.I believe dye wouldn't penetrate well on some of that and those are areas that would receive the most wear.I think after awhile you would have white shining through.

On the Texas knife page, the 1 1/2"x 1" buffalo spacer looks good to me.Anyone with a lathe should be able to turn that down to your liking.

I work buffalo horn, since I make powder horns.  I even have some here.  How big would you need?  I have one horn tip sitting here, and one I could take off for you (first step to making a powder horn, you know.)  Either I could send you the horn tips, or I could attach them for you.

BTW, have fun dyeing antler.  You could try boiling it to open up pores, but I don't think you'd get black.  Just trying to give antler an aged look liked to killed me trying.  But, buying buffalo horn like they mentioned would work just the same as what I have.  It works pretty easily with files and sandpaper.  Just don't breathe the dust unless you fancy lung infections.

Thanks for the input guys.  Halfsem' I appreciate the offer.  Might be just the thing, I will let you know.  Steve at Voodoo Kustoms is likely the man gonna do it, but that's TBD.
