"Timex" gets a new look for 2007
« on: September 02, 2007, 09:49:00 PM »
My tried and true 63# Kempf Kwyk Styk, has been thru so much. That's how it earned the name "Timex". This is it's 11th season coming up.....

For 9 yrs. it looked like this....

Then for last year it looked like this...

Then when I shot this buck.....

It ended up half un-strung and looking like this(hammered the lower limb on my hand climber)....

Those skins were in bad shape before that shot, and that shot did them in....

After getting some skins from a fellow tg'r earlier this year... now it looks like this.......

I'll get some better pix tomorrow in better lighting.

Looking forward to carrying "Timex" in the early season and Kansas on my hunt with Tracy(kstrapper)in mid October.  When it gets cold and my old joints get a bit stiff,I'll be carrying "Cy",my 58# KS.....

Like I said,I'll try to get better pix tomorrow...

Curt,

Great to hear your heading out to KS for a mid season hunt.  I live about 15 minutes north of the airport if your flying in from NY.

Kansas should give you more of what you saw up in Iowa last year.  Where are you and Tracy hunting?

Great looking skins.  Copperheads are great looking on a bow. IMO they are the best of the bunch.

Curt, fine job, wish I knew how to do that, got a Quest that would look great with copperheads.

Fine looking skins, what technique did you use to apply them?  Those copperheads are stunning.

I've been hunting with a bow I picked up used, it had skins on it.  I can feel an edge lifting a bit.

Thanks guys.....I sure like the way they looks....Kinda wish I'd put them on "Cy" also...maybe someday....

David, I sure hope so bud

Chris, I believe I'll be flying into KC,MO.....and we'll be hunting around where Tracy lives a little south of Lawrence....

Danny, It's really a piece of cake. Before last year I'd never done a thing with skins, now I've done 4 bows, and a couple dozen primitive arrows, and 4-5 wing bone calls. I know how you feel though. It's more about "growing a set", to get over the intial fear of getting started. And also making sure you don't get cheap when trimming and always using a new razor sharp blade for every cut. Using a bunch on every bow is the way to go bud.

Thanks Jim,  "Timex" has served me well, on that shot I severly banged hit my lower limb, that's why the bow ended up in the shape it did. But "Timex" still managed to put it where it needed to go....

Larry, I used a wet skin,Tite bond II on "Timex", and dry skin contact cement on "Cy"....I love superior bond of the contact cement, put it's hard to get the skins straight if they're not dried straight. So I went with the tite bond II on this one. I hope it holds up...

If you have an edge lifting, just touch it up with some contact cement or CA glue.

Curt,

Let me know if you need a taxi driver from the airport. It would be worth the drive to Lawrence just to hear about the hunt and meet a few other trad gang members.

that is awsome I tried with a rattler skin that I killed turkey hunting one year and it must have been the glue, they came off 1/2 way through the season. what glue do you use?

Hb, For the rattlesnake skins on "Cy", I used contact cement. A very superior bond, but very hard to get straight in the skins start out crooked,or the skins aren't dried straight. But the bond is almost failure proof.

The copperheads are with Tite-bond II, Much easier to work with, but I've had some problems getting a good bond and durability over time in the past. But since these skins weren't dried real straight,I went with it. Hopefully by really sanding well and using Thunderbird as  finish, they'll hold up....we'll see

But in the future,it as all possible,I'll go with contact cement. Way better bond on fiberglass...
