No more Garming GPS 60csx so what should I purchase?
« on: August 19, 2013, 01:29:00 AM »
Got a few friends with the Garmin GPS 60csx and they love them. Since that model is not available what should I purchase. I am wanting to get a new gps. My older models just don't work so well in the thick wooded areas and I want a model with maps.
Thanks,
Mark

I use and like the etrex series but i think they are a step dwon from the 60csx model. But i really like them. they come with standard maps and you can add custom maps via garmin or independent map makers to include snow/atv trails, 2 tracks, etc. The reception on the newer etrex line is much better than the original etrex that came out many years ago.

I have a 60Csx, and you are right - it is a great little unit.  If I were looking now I would sure take a look at the Garmin Rino's.  I know a couple people that have them and love them as well.  They offer the advantage of being able to see other Rino users on your unit so you can keep track of where your buddies are.  They also have a bult in 2 way radio.  I'm almost wishing I had upgraded this year, but didn't consider it soon enough and now don't want to mess with all the mapping and transfering waypoints.

I went all out with my last GPS purchase and got the Montana. Absolutely love this unit! The size is a little larger than the "Map" models but aging eye make the larger screen worth the extra bulk. From a features perspective there is no rival. Probably my last GPS!

I've got a GPSmap 60csx and agree it's a nice unit.  I know they are discontinued but they are still available.  A quick search turned up two new ones in stock on Amazon and several on the auction site, but I assume they are used...of course they are a   lot cheaper than new  .

I've had great luck with my 60csx so if you want something current the first thing I would look at is whatever replaced the 60csx in Garmins lineup.

Whatever you get make sure it has an electronic compass.

Oregon seems to be the flagship of the Garmin line for trail use. If you can benefit from its many features, it's worth it. You should have no problems figuring it out if you understood the 60csx.

I have a 60csx and it is a good unit. I mostly use a Rino 655T. The radio has come in handy a few times. If I'm hunting near the house, I leave a radio with my wife.  If she needs me for something urgent, she can get me. And vice versa.

It has been very useful for keeping track of my hunting buddy, especially if we are hunting in the same vicinity. We can keep tabs on each other, primarily so we can stay out of each others way. And, when one of use needs help dragging something out, we don't need to walk a mile back to the truck.

Watch Craigs list. I picked up one a couple years ago with USA maps and Water maps for $125. Great unit!
I would've taken better care of myself,if I'd known I was gonna live this long!

Discontinuing our beloved 60 series GPS units was a mistake that Garmin realized pretty quickly, hence the 62 series.  I would absolutely go with the 62 or a used 60.  I see a lot of used and abused GPS units and a lot of trashed touch screens, but many of the 60's are just beat up...just sayin'.

Touch screens cost more to replace than a new unit.
