Freeze dried

Looking for ways to cut cost on hunting trip. Are these any good?  I like Mt. House meals but the price is hard on the wallet.

I dehydrate a lot of my own stuff at home. Soups, deer burger, fruits, scrambled eggs, lean ham. I also use some of the just add water soup mixes and add the burger to that. I was amazed at what I could dehydrate when I got into the backpacking thing. Watched a video of a guy dehydrating shrimp mozambique.

Hard to beat the Moutain House breakfast scramble wrap though.

I'd stick to the noodle isle unless your splitting with several others.  I suspect I would be sick of one item trying to get it gone before the can went bad.

I've done a lot of backpacking, and pretty much stick to dried or dehydrated foods.  I've had problems with the freeze dried foods not rehydrating enough, or maybe the freeze drying changes them in some more fundamental way, because I always get terrible farts or heartburn or both in the middle of the night, which is hard on both my tentmate and me.  (Maybe it's just me).

I had planned to do up my own as they would be cheaper and healthier... and probably a lot tastier. However, with all the other things to get packed and ready I decided to shell out the bucks and buy my MH favorites.

Another thing you can take are Ramen noodles and foil packs of chicken. The chicken adds protein (I only use about 1/2 of the seasoning packet as it is VERY high in sodium).

Oh yeah... Idaho instant potatoes come in flavors like; loaded baked potato and cheesy potato. They are also easy to fix and really add variety.

One of the elk hunting threads awhile back got me hooked on peanut butter bacon honey wheat tortillas. Keeps well and keeps you going.

Bear heart, where did you see or find those? Might be worth buying some to try. I agree mountain house are good but the cost is high. Even purchased in bulk, always looking for new opinions. I dehydrate and vacuum seal stuff quite a bit. But a nice warm meal is good for the soul when in the back country
