Kansas hunting...
« on: August 22, 2013, 01:56:00 AM »
My family and I moved to Kansas a couple of months ago... We are living in a suburb of Wichita, Derby... I keep hearing there is public hunting land close to here, and bowhunting only land at that...  If anyone is from around here or has hunted in this area can you help a fellow hunter out?  Really just need to be pointed in the right direction, I can figure things out from there...  I'd be interested in getting into a bowhunting only lease too if anyone is looking for another member.

I know it is late in the game, but with my situation as it is I'm trying to get some hunting in this fall hopefully close to home for a change...

Thanks in advance!

Check with the office of Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks.Should be one around Wichita? They will have a map/booklet of walk in and public land out eventually, the Fall regs usually don't get printed till around September...
The KDWP website should have some info as well. There is not a lot of good public land in Kansas but there are a few spots around lakes and resevoirs that are Corps of Engineers land that are OK.
Good luck

You can down load maps from the website.   There is some good hunting, a lot of it around lakes.   I hunt quite a bit around Lake Clinton and Lake Perry.   Both are just a little north of you.

There is quite a bit of walk-in ground around Cheney Lake, Just to the west of ya 30-40 minutes or so. There are also a lot of hunters out there as well, mainly rifle hunters. You might have to walk a long ways to get away from all the idiots out there but there are a lot of nice bucks around the lake.I hunted it when I was in college and saw some nice deer north of the lake. Also, chain and padlock your stand to the tree, or you might be better off from the ground, that way you don't lose a stand. It would benefit you to get a walk-in-hunting atlas for that area and just spend a weekend looking at all the spots. Good luck!!!

Not sure what all is available to you down that way, Cheney should be close, Elk City, El dorado. If you head west there is Pratt Sandhills, but I think it is a special draw. Make sure that you pick up a WHIA atlas when they come out

Scouting this past weekend was a bust. The woods where we hunt was like a swamp and the mosquitoes were everywhere. Hot weather for the next two weeks should straighten things out a bit.
