Favorite performance metric
« on: August 22, 2013, 08:31:00 PM »
I don't believe performance is everything.  The feel of a bow and the ability to consistently hit where we are aiming are of the upmost importance, but having said that I don't see why you can't have your cake and eat it too.  In an ideal world you could shoot two bows while controlling all variables like draw weight, arrow weight, string design, etc.  in the real world it might be a 62" vs 60", a 400 gr arrow vs 550 gr arrow, and on and on.  Is there a metric other than FPS that you like to account for this?  I don't know much about dynamic efficiency or stored energy per pound of draw but I'd like to hear a discussion about what performance variables you like to pay attention to.  Looking forward to hearing from yall

Much has been invested to further enhance torsional stability and often times increased velocity has been a by-product.

Q-u-I-e-t-n-e-s-s !  Is that a word?

I can't tell you how many times I've been rewarded with a second chance due to working hard at silencing my bows

I'm really interested in how to quantify each of these variables.  So if quietness is your go to, specifically how do you measure it?  How do you know if you have the brace height just right and how much of it do you attribute to the string, the arrow, the silencers?

Experience- talking with the makers- and shooting it with people standing by who say"dang that bow is quiet"!

I'm very low tech- if quantifying requires measurement with scientific formulas or equipment I'd never get it figured out

The difference between 165 FPS and 200 FPS is a measly few inches at 20 yards but neither arrow will reach the buck before the twang of a poorly tuned bow

Ray,

I totally agree with you regarding the sound.  It's just hard to get your hands on certain bows to try them out and I find that everyone tends to think their bow is the fastest, quietest, smoothest, etc.  It'd be nice if there were a few things you could look at objectively without even being able to shoot it yourself.  At least you could narrow down the number of bows you wanted to try and get.

Sorry Chuck.  Seems people have an objection to this kind of question I don't understand.  I don't think it's the end all be all (as I stated in my initial post), I just like the idea of actual data rather than subjective opinion.  Maybe it's something that's been hashed a rehashed for others, I was just curious what more experienced guys than myself on here found helpful.

Don't be sorry.  Everybody has needs and opinions.  A lot of folks really need to quantify things.  A lot of us don't, not in those terms anyway.   "sounds pretty quiet to me" is a defineable term in my mind.  Give me your bow for a shot and I will tell you.

Well, blood on your arrow is always a good metric, but I guess that is not what you meant. I also agree that quietness may be the dominant factor.

I'm a handle guy, so the feel of my personally altered grip, filling my palm and the sight of my arrow going exactly to the point I am looking at is the game for me.

A bow that is easy to tune and shoots a range of arrows with excellent arrow flight is mandatory.

Repeatability; feeling the same thing every shot and reproducing perfect arrow flight is something I expect.

Agree with quiet for sure, I wouldn't be shooting a noisy bow...I wouldn't own one.

Those are some of my primary metrics, plus about ten others.

My favorite thing to do is shoot two bows side by side, back and forth to really feel the differences between them.  I just can't always do that.  I agree with both the quietness (like times when I've shot two or three hogs and just kept reloading) and the handle.  I have a hard time describing my perfect grip, just know it when I feel it I guess.
