ADK help...?
« on: August 26, 2013, 06:55:00 AM »
Just got back from the ADK,s. Drove thru all of the High Peaks Area. Essex county/Keene area. What a pristine place.  I live in Rochester and have been hunting local and Southern Tier deer for over 25years. Many people dream of heading west for there dream hunt. I do also, but i dream of hunting in the ADK.  My question is...Where does one start? This is one huge, intimidating place. I am no fool and dont posess many woodsman/survival skills. Being a decent deer hunter isnt any good when you spend the whole time worried about getting lost..I have no problem hiring a guide if i have to. However i am just looking for a decent place to start. Blue mountain area, jussup wilderness, tupper lake...and a thousand other possibilities ? Any info would be great. Thanks.

Ronp and I are tent hunting moose river wilderness the last weekend of September. Your welcome to put up a tent as well. 40,000 acres of regrowth forest with less than plentiful deer but you just never know when you'll pick the right watch to meet up with a good one.

Most of the area is in a big valley so its tough to get lost even though you can walk a loooooong way without hitting a road. Primitive camps are maintained by the state. Outhouse, fire pit, grill and picnic tables at each camp site.

Man I love the ADK. I hunted the high peaks area a few times and that is not for the faint of heart. Those pictures of the moose river plains look spectacular!

I'm going to have to get out there sometime. Look like it's not too insane in terms of the terrain too.

I hunted in Minerva near the Boreas River a few times. I wasn't prepared for how thick it was. Like Izzy I followed a hollow back a ways and kept myself between the hills so I didn't get lost. I didn't see many deer in those few trips but did see alot of droppings and trails. If you can't spend time scouting I think one place is as good as another. Never know what might come by up there. I see a lot of good bucks along I - 90. I have friends in Rochester. Good luck. TonyZ

Good luck to all of you. The Adk's is a beautiful location. Have considered a big woods hunt up there for some time and after a camping trip not too long ago I know I will do it in the next year or two. Bigger, prettier, and more challenging then expected. Coming from farm and suburban hunting the terrain and big woods really seems intimidating. I have a feeling in reality if you keep it to the basics of food, bedding, and "conforms travel zones" you'll have no problem. There are a lot of trailheads and lots of information available in terms of maps and guide books that should help keep you from getting too lost. The idea of having a "real" chance at a bear on the same hunt appeals to this PA hunter even if the odds would be low. Seeing the Moose River Plains area pics really looks promising Izzy. Love hunting near beaver ponds and water.
