Labs and sheds...
« on: August 26, 2013, 08:02:00 PM »
this is my Labs first shed from our ranch...we saw the elk go through earlier that day...never found the other half, and we looked a lot. I think it came off before or after it cruised through our place...

he came up with it in his mouth dragging it pretty proud!
super fresh...half of a nice 5X5

are there any other folks that have a dog that finds sheds?? I hear they are used a lot for white tails....

Outstanding work!!!
I shed hunt my lab also. He is a yellow lab, but he is getting old, lazy and fat now a days so he drive is not the same. He does go bow hunting with me though and he is a great tag along. He sits by the truck and naps while I'm in the woods. He will help me find a deer if needed or he just likes to hear the days stories if I do not get one.

That's a Lab for you! If youcan get them to understand what you want them to find, they're relentless!

sheds arent something that are so abundant where I am...of course there are some spots that are loaded, but in the mountains they arent such a normal find, at least in any kind of regular area...

my dog found this on his own,we were just cruising the ranch checking fencelines. I think its because when he was a pup I used to throw the bottom half of an elk shed for him to retrieve...he also loved to chew on it until I almost broke a window on our cabin from a lousy throw...I pitched it on the roof to get it out of his mind...LOL...maybe he thought he found that one!

This is Jessie.  The first thing I gave her as a puppy was a shed.  She still carries it around!  She finds a few every year.

I trained her by throwing fresh sheds in the pasture then rewarding her with pieces of hotdog and tons of praise.  And it's true, once a lab knows what makes you happy, that's all they want to do!

What Mike said. Parker had nothing but old sheds to chew on and play with from day one. He pretty much trained himself. Best Dog I've ever had! Labs are the best IMHO.

It's really simple. Just don't take those borderline shots. Tomorrow is another day.

Love those labs!!!Mine is 13 now and having some hip trouble. He still has the drive but his body just cant keep up.
He has saved me untold hundreds of dollars in arrows he has found. Not to mention the years of pheasant hunting. It will be a sad day when he is gone.
