Arrows too stiff
« on: August 30, 2013, 05:00:00 PM »
While searching for an answer as to why my bow was so noisy, I found that my arrows are too stiff.
Not sure of the correlation...but that's what I was told and increasing my point weight from 145g to 175g, the noise decreased significantly.
Now, I'm wondering...instead of increasing my point weight, can I instead cut my arrows longer?

BTW..bow is 50#@28, 400 shafts w 5" feathers, cut at 28-1/2"

If longer arrows would do the trick...how much longer would they need to be to achieve the 145 to 175g weight difference?

Thanks,  Steve

Just based on my experience with my bows of fairly similar weight, I'd say those .400 spine arrows are at the very bottom of the usable spine range with 175 gr points. I'm thinking some .500 spine arrows would give you more flexibility on point weight. I'm using 29.5 - 30.5" .500 spine arrows with 145 - 175gr points out of my 47 - 50# bows.

My black GT3555 are a bit stiffer than the Trad 3555's, but it seems like I'm sort of right in the middle of their usable range.

I shoot 50# at my 29.5" DL and use 32" Gold Tip 55/75's (.400 black) shafts with 145gr. points and 100gr brass insert.

If you are using standard inserts, you will have to use VERY heavy points to get them to tune correctly, or go down to a weaker spine shaft.

Go to a .500 spine and cut them to 29"s and shoot at least 175 grain points. I would cut them 29.5"s than the 175 grain points should be about right. Shawn

I wouldn't cut first. Start out at full length and work down by bareshafting. Lots of ways to wind up at the same point, different lengths, different point weights, weighted inserts, etc.

This is what I would do too if I had a particular point weight in mind.

I like an arrow a certain length. I am not a gap shooter but hate a bunch of arrow sticking out front. I tune with point weight, today it is very simple with all the available components. I have owned a lot of Widows and if you want a 28.5" arrow and draw 27.5-28"s than you will need more than 175, 200 would be darn close. Shawn

weight will fix most things bow related, add75moregrains, and it wont make a sound.

I tend to agree with r-man.  Your arrow may be a bit stiff as is, but it's also quite light.  You already found that your bow got quieter when you added a little weight.  Add a little more and solve both problems, stiffness and noise.   :)
