How to hunt Big diameter trees
« on: September 06, 2013, 12:16:00 AM »
Here is a video that shows how I modify my gear for hunting big diameter trees that are to big for your stands and sticks.  Also shows a cool little trick to tell if a tree needs a modified set up or if a standard stick and stand will work.

Good stuff.  I use the same stand for big trees.  I think my early ones were by Rivers Edge, and now the only one I find like it is a baby gorilla chain on.  I use a stick ladder vs the short sections for big trees.  My big tree ladders have rope tie on instead of straps.  I find the rope easier to tie one hand on a boat anchor cleat type anchor point, and the ropes are easy to replace with extra long ones I just leave on the ladder vs add onto for large trees.

The last piece to the big tree puzzle is your safety system.  Climbing a tree larger than you can reach around is tricky.  It is much harder to get your climbing sticks and stand attachments around it and to hold on while you do it.  It is very important your lineman’s belt is long enough.  You also need to make sure your tree safety strap is long enough once you are up.  Many of them are too short to go around a really big tree.  My safety harness is a mix of three different ones.  I have the harness I like best with my longest belt and longest tree strap combined to work best on a big tree.  I just use the mix for all applications.

Big trees are good for leaning against while still hunting.  :)

hahahah.....I spent quite a while diggin it out.  Partly because the Woodsman Elite's ain't cheap, but more because I didn't want to stare at it every day for the rest of my hunting life.

Actually, that might not have been too bad.  Kind of a reminder to hit my damn anchort point before releasing!
