need arrow advise please
« on: September 07, 2013, 11:17:00 AM »
Hello, this is my first time to post on tradgang but I have heard that there is no better place for information than here and I need some help. Currently I am shooting a Ragim black bear 45# @ 28 I am shooting goldtip traditional 1535's at full length 100 grain brass inserts and 125 grain tips, I have a Toelke Chinook 53# @ 28 coming soon and would like to have some arrows waiting for it when it arrives,so my question is will my arrows work for my new bow or will i need to get some new ones? This will be my hunting bow if that helps any
Thank you to all who take the time to read this and I appreciate any advise I can get

I'm sure others will chime in with more questions such as draw length in particular.

For what it's worth, I shoot 1535's out of my low-to-mid 40# bows - usually with a bit less weight up front and they fly very nicely for me. Once I get up toward the high 40 - low 50# range, I like 3555s. They seem more flexible for this weight bow. I can leave them full length with lighter points, or cut them back to 29.5" (I draw 28.5") and load them up with some heavier points. They will be my hunting arrows this fall with 160 gr broadheads and standard inserts and I have a couple of them with 20gr weights added so I can shoot my 145gr field points to the same point of aim as the 160gr BHs.

OK, so you'll be shooting around 50lbs. I would think the 3555s will give you a little more range if you want to keep a heavy point weight.

I'd leave them full length and try them with the point weight you want. Assuming they are a little weak, you can then cut them back a little until you get good flight.

Sounds like really good advise above... I would like to add, a great tuning tool is to learn a bare shaft tuning method. Once you know how to bare shaft tune you can answer a lot of your own questions. Traditional shooting is very personal and there is usually not any single answer for any given question. Don't be afraid to get you and set of different weight field points and see what flies best for you. Have fun!!!

I have owned a Toelke Chinookalmost the same specs. You will be shooting right around 50#s with your 27" draw. I would say a 35/55 cut to 28.5" with 225 grains of point weight will be about perfect. I would leave it at 30"s and cut back a 1/2" at a time from nock end with the 225 up front until you get perfect flight. My guess is 28.5-29.5"s is where you will end up! The .600 may work but you would have to cut to 28"s and try 175 grains up front and than the arrow will be pretty light. Shawn
