HELP: Need tannery in eastern Washington

Hey All,
My hunting partner shot a nice little 5x5 elk this morning and didn't want the hide so I took it after we packed out the meat. I want to get it tanned without the hair but need a tannery. The first taxidermist that took the hide bailed and said he misunderstood what I wanted and couldn't do it.
Does any one know anybody who could tan an elk hide without and remove the hair?
Much thanks in advance!

If you want thier easy to do. Just get online to a tanning supply company and do it yourself.

Thanks Doug! I may end up doing it myself but I have limited time and it would be easier to have someone who knows what their doing for now. Worst case scenario- I'll throw it in the freezer until I can do it myself.

I have read in the past few months that the only tannery west of the Mississippi is Quil Ceda Tannery in Marysville...but they just closed.
I would get on the phone to the taxidermists in your area and get info about tannerys from them. You may have to ship your hide somewhere, so I guess your freezer is the best place for it.
Have you tried Kettle Falls Tannery? They were in operation 2-3 years ago...but
Good luck...and I hope you got some of that meat and not just the hide.

Thanks Lon- I'll check out Kettle Falls Tannery. Looks like I bit off a bigger project than I first thought!
And yes- I'm getting a good amount of meat too!

You might check with Moscow Hide and Fur - Only 6 miles from Pullman WA

Pacific Hide and Fur used to tan hides in WA but they quit a few years ago.
Good luck

I think I found a good book on DIY tanning/making buckskins that I can get from the library.
I've got the hide in the freezer until I am ready to start on the project and have enough time to do it.
Thanks for the advice and if anyone else has info or tips I'd be happy to hear it.

There are a lot of tanneries across the country but very few that do hair off tanning.Just because someone tans, don't assume that includes hair off tanning. It's a very specialized process.

Stretch it out on a big frame of 2x4 and scape it down real good on the leather side until it gets whitish. Then get a few boxes of Dixie Tan. After using the dixie according to directions, just work it while it dries and you will have a nice smelling, soft hide with hair.

Can't help with the tannery but congrats to your huntin buddy. We just spent the last week in the blues above Dayton and the temps were high and the bugs and bees abundant! Heard an occasional bugle but not a lot of action. Not the best elk hunting weather for sure.
