its raining
« on: September 15, 2013, 09:36:00 AM »
and the wind is wrong for my stand locations.      :banghead:

So I stayed home and made a big batch of biscuits and gravy for the family.     :coffee:    :goldtooth:

Hoping I can get out this afternoon.  Got a turkey tag and about a hunert deer tags and some goose tags (they don't start till tomorrow),  and I retired a month ago.   I was getting really bored, but, the time is now prime.

Good luck all

Chuck, i think you are being Modest.  I heard Its POURING!

hope you can sneak out when it stops, deer like to move after prolonged rains. Besides the packer game at noon may not be worth watching anyhow lol. You can always record it  :dunno:

Good Luck!
Relax,

You'll live longer!

I would gladly give up some hunting time right now in exchange for some rain. It's been well over 2 months

I'm taking a break from elk hunting for a couple of days; pouring down here, but nothing like Colorado has gotten!

Monsoons have been bad this year with lots of rain for the last 60 days for sure. Today is the first sunny day in weeks. One night coming out from chasing elk I had to take a 1 1/2 hour detour because the road washed out! You would think I don't live in a desert anymore.

It might be a good day to get a stand set up for whatever winds you don't have a stand for.     ;)

I'm not saying you don't have such stands set up, but for others reading, if they don't have stands set up for NE, E and SE winds, they'll really hurt their opportunity.

I've been keeping records for a long time at my place in the central part of the lower penisula in Michigan. During the Fall, we get more southerly and easterly winds than people think. Many people think that westerly or even north-westerly winds are the prevailing winds in the Great Lakes region. The truth is, we can have stormy October's and November's where 50% of the days have some sort of easterly wind. Also, we get more SW-SSW winds than people assume. The assuption is that NW winds are most common. In truth, winds from the NW-ish are only about 25% of the winds.

Dr. Jim Brauker, Ph.D. is an avid deer hunter and deer manager. A few years ago he did a breakdown of Michigan winds in October and November. The results were interesting and matches my unscientific log entries.

Winds-

Mainly from the west-43%
Marginally from the west-21% (SSW-NNW)
Not from the west-36%

So, if one doesn't have alternate stands fror non-west winds, they could be SOL on almost 40% of the average winds. But more than that, they could miss a whole week of prime rut/chase period, if a low pressure front sits off to out SW and sucks in winds from the NE, which is often the case on those great, cloudy, rain-mixed with snow rut days where the bucks are on the move all day.

You are correct, 'cept I'm not talking about just a tree, but the south wind blows right into the bedding areas.  I hunt a marsh area that is north of an uplands area, separated by a drainage ditch.  There are several spots that they prefer to cross.

They come south out of the marsh in the evening.  I guess I could get out there early and try to catch them coming back (north).

I can wait for right winds.

I hear ya and understand that. I was mentioning for other readers too. I have a spot that can't be hunted in really any wind.

I have a tight ravine on my land that is hammered with 5-6 big trails criss-crossing and it's essentially unhuntable. Not that we haven't tried and tried, but the winds swirl so bad, and the termals too, that we get busted all the time. The spot is like the sirens call. Everytime we scout it, we say we have to get a stand there and everytime we remove a failed stand because of the winds, we say we're never getting sucked into putting a stand there again!   ;)    :D

Good luck and I hope the winds change for you.

We've gotten quite a bit of rain in Georgia but nothing like the rain some of you guys in other states are dealing with. Our season opened yesterday, and the weather has been very nice. When things clear up, we expect pics of deer who consider Bullwinkle just a little cousin.
