How much point weight for 340 spine? ***Updated***
« on: September 28, 2013, 01:46:00 PM »
I have some Beman .340 that are 29". How much point weight would it take for my daughter to be able to shoot these? Her bow is a 58" Zipper SXT it is 35# at her draw length at 25".

I am playing with some stuff now, I will be back tomorrow to see what ya'll think...

Here is a clue    :D

I'm sorry to say this but I don't think they make a point weight heavy enough for a 340 spine to shoot from a 35# bow much less at 25" draw. She needs a 600 spine carbon to be spined right for that bow.

I agree with the others, that is way too stiff a shaft for a bow of that weight.  I shoot a 31" .340 with tips ranging from 175-250 grains out of my 50#-59# recurves, and I draw them to 29".  That's a long way from 35# at 25", and the 2" shorter arrow makes them even stiffer than mine.

Good luck, I think something in the .600 or even lighter spine would work better.

Thinking 600 spine shafts may be what is needed.

Yeah, would take a small anvil up front to make those fly, I have to load up in the 150-175gr area with a 32" 340 and I pull 54#@31"

This is the rest of the story.

I set this arrow up to hunt Alligators. On the point end is a 100 grain brass insert, a 145 grain field point and then a 250 grain Muzzy Gator getter point. That puts basically 500 grains of point weight! Also it has a bowfishing line attached that helps straighten it out a little.

My daughter has excellent form,  (not sure where she gets that from) and these arrows shoot like darts for her out of this bow. We practice out to around 10 yards

Here is a teaser from last night! I'll start another thread with some details.

I hate to even bring this up but is 35# enough to shoot an alligator with. I would consider 35# minimum for deer.

No problem James.

The object on a gator is to get a line attached to it. You only have to have enough penetration to get the barbs on the point through the skin. The sides are the target. You then "play" the gator like a fish to get him to the boat. Once you have him totally secured at the boat where he can not get away, he is then dispatched humanly and quickly with the means that you choose.

Yeah I saw it. I was thinking though it might not get through the scales on the side. Glad it worked out for you guys.
