First self-bow hunt...almost!
« on: October 03, 2013, 10:20:00 PM »
So I headed out to some public land I hunted a couple years ago where I harvested the log that became my first self-bow. It seemed only fitting to take it back and hunt near the stump it came from. So arriving before daylight I began walking into the area and was almost stopped dead in my tracks by the thick growth. We had a wet year and man things are different in the woods. So I made my way to where I wanted to hunt and it was just a jungle so I tried to keep going to find a tree to sit. I justcouldn't find a spot that would work. At this point the sun is starting to come up and I needed to get settled. I moved to the field edge and found the first tree that would work near an old trail.  An hour and a half later and nothing. I just wasn't feeling it and the Mosquitos were killing me. Crazy I know but it was time to move. I worked my way down the edge till I found more open woods with fresh trails and a better travel lane from the open ground. I got setup and was worried I blew it and wasn't going to see anything. So I settled in for a fruitless wait. Then I saw her. Fifteen minutes into the new spot and there was a doe approaching from upwind, then there was another one, and another, and wait one closer and on a different trail. This one was a nice small 7pt @ 15yds.but behind some brush. The does worked up a trail about 30yds away and I was hoping the buck would turn up one of the trails closer to me on his way to the does. But no, he traveled straight away to where the does headed up. No shot. Oh well. It was all going to come together on my first hunt with my self-bow but at least I did see deer, a buck even, at 15yds, on the ground, on public land that I have only hunted two other days in 5 years. I was a little disappointed at first but realized how awesome the morning really was when I told the story to my son, the hunt is the point not just the kill.   Three more months to get the kill.
