"Woodie love" got me thinking
« on: October 07, 2013, 09:27:00 PM »
I've only been shooting archery period for two years. I was given a compound and a longbow at the same time to try out. The compound was alright but the longbow just felt right. Put the compound in the case and haven't opened it since. I started off with carbons and haven't shot very many cedars but I do have some.
I finally opened the woodie love post today and upon browsing through one of the first things that stuck with me was someone made a comment that you see posts about which Carbon or which aluminum should I shoot but hardly any on which wood spine. So here it goes, which spine should I go with? I have a 58" #51@28 static tip recurve and a 60" #54@28 longbow than I shoot mostly. I have a 29" draw( when I actually do everything right).
I almost pulled the trigger on some footed cedars last year at kzoo but they were only 30" and I was concerned that I might not get them to tune if I needed to shorten them. I drug my feet to long and someone else grabbed them. They were #60-65s.
So my question is what spine should I be shooting and do you think I can get away shooting the same arrow out of multiple bows? Thanks in advance for the advice.
Josh

How are the shelves cut on these two bows? What point weight are you going to shoot?

I believe the longbow is cut to center and the recurve might be a little past. I'll have to double check when I get home from work. The longbow is a dryad Orion and the recurve is a rer arroyo if that helps. As far a point weight goes I have mainy shot 125. The only time I've messed with point weight is trying to get carbons to tune. Thanks

Get a test pack from snag above you will know for sure.

The arroyo I believe is cut past center wilderness crafted arrows are excellent.

Yea I have seen some of his work. Beautiful stuff. Ok here's another question. If you have a footed arrow do you need to be shooting a higher spine because of the higher FOC?
Thanks Josh

Really thought I'd get some input on this. Guess I'll keep shooting carbons.

Been busy making arrows.....Ok, with your 29" draw length you are shooting 54# with the recurve and 57# with the LB.  For the recurve I'd recommend 80/85's cut to 30" bop.  The LB might like the same arrows if it is cut to center and slightly heavier poundage.  But it never hurts to try a couple of spine groups in a couple of test arrows.  Don't give up so easy on this. You'll love shooting wood.

Snag,
I just read that last thing I posted and I realized that I sounded like a jerk. I wasn't meaning that the way it sounded. I know your busy running your business and I appreciate your help.
I think I'm going to have to order a test kit and see what flies good for each bow. I would have never thought 80-85 but your the expert and that why I was inquiring. Thanks again for your input and I'll look on your website about how to order a test kit.
Thanks Josh

Best to try 75/80 and 80/85. I shoot a recurve that is gut past center in that draw weight range and they tune up real nice. I'm sure we can put a smile on your face with one of these!

Try Stew's spine calculator.  works good for me.  There are many things you can do with both the bow and the arrow to arrive at good flight.
