Nothing but memories
« on: October 11, 2013, 08:14:00 PM »
Just finished up my two day hunt at Camp Croft State Park here in SC. The hunt started off a little rough. When we arrived at our camp site the plan was to set up my pop up camper then take my canoe across the lake to do some last min scouting and hang my stand. That fell apart when upon our arrival my camper broke a cable. Meaning my pop no longer pops up. Thankfully my friend was able to go and get his camper (we both live not too terribly far from the camp) but it was well after dark before we got camp made. So my plans for that evening met a quick demise.
The next morning I made it in the woods at 0530. I found a heavily traveled trail and set up on the ground using some brush to make a small blind. Before 0800 I had two does, both large and mature come by but as it seems to go lately. The came in about 15 yards above the trail I was watching. And crossed safely behind the one tree I didn't trim thinking "Na, I've got enough shooting lanes."  The casually skirted me and walked calmly away. As I sat there enjoying the experience and thinking about nothing in particular, I heard a squirrel get upset at something behind me. In my thoughts of nothingness I didn't pay it any attention. That is until I went to stretch and jumped another big deer at about 10yards behind me. That was the last one I saw that day.
The next morning I put my canoe in the water at day break.

The Lord really makes an amazing world, but back on topic. I paddled to the area I had wanted to hunt to begin with and found a hardwood ridge line that was littered with tracks, scrapes, acorns, and muscidines. I hunted there the following day but all I got to watch we're a lot of birds, squirrels, and a giant raccoon. All in all just a great time in the field took some nice pics. And got to talk to some other bowhunters in camp. There were a lot of deer killed by lots of folks. Plan to give it another go next year, and if anyone's interested, it would be great to see some more trad guys in camp.
Here's some pics from the hunt
