Scrapes are open for business!
« on: October 19, 2013, 10:17:00 AM »
This past week I have been getting pics on the scrape lines during daylight. Here is a scrape tip that can produce for you!

Find a scrape at least a mile away from the one you want to hunt. Put on a pair of surgical glove and with a hand tool dig the top 1/2" or so of the scrape up and place it in a clean plastic bucket or bag. Take that dirt and pour it into your scrape and be there the next day!

I always have a stand already hung at least  a week in advance of when I hunt it. Also a must is to check the wind direction for the following day before you pour in the competitors dirt!

Hope this works for a few of you and please don't tell anyone in Kentucky about this.

TJ, Send me a bag of that Kentucky dirt so I can lure that buck to New York :0)
Do not follow where the path may lead.  Go, instead, where there is no path and leave a trail.

Gotta find a fresh scrape first, but I have yet to see one this season. Our deer need to get with the program!

Agreed Centaur, I haven't seen even a remote hint of pre-rut activity, no scrapes, no rubs.  I know we have a few bucks in the area and one decent 13 pt., yet no signs of activity.  We have a lot of foliage left on trees and ground due to mild temps and alot of corn in the fields yet.  Maybe the bucks aren't feeling it yet!  I am hoping something gets kicking here soon.
That is a dang good idea TJ, I like it!

We've got a couple of small 5-6 pointers making some noise around here. Scrapes and 4 sumac rubbed about 50 feet from my back door! Set the trail cam there to see if that's still the case.
Later in the season the bigger bucks roll in, but we want to be sure. I'll try that tip a bit later, thanks TJ.

I also freeze scrape dirt for future use. Yes your wife will think your crazy for having glom sized ziplocks of dirt in the freezer but after a few years it seems normal!
