I have really banged my bow up this season...
« on: October 30, 2013, 07:12:00 AM »
I got a new Fred Bear 59' Kodiak this year. At first I really could not shoot it very well but it has turned into my go to bow. Its amazing what tuning properly will do. Anyway I have banged it up pretty good hunting with it. (I am usually more careful) I was thinking about sending it to bow doc after the season was over to give her a make over. Has anyone used him before? How did the bow turn out. Any pictures of his work?

I have been wondering the same thing, banged up My Martin Hatfield pretty good last year. I'll be watching this thread.

I had John Rafferty of the Bow Hospital do some work on one of my bows and I saw several others he was working on. Really great work.

I cannot post a picture, but several years ago I had Bowdoc refinish a Bear Super Mag. It looks like new.

Like the Old Biker saying goes: "Chrome Dont Get Ya Home." I think a Slightly Banged Up Bow gives it Character! But, of course thats My Opinion. I like 'em all Purtyfied and Shiney too, but I have more respect for a Bow with Character Marks!! Good Luck on getting your Bow Refinished!!

Mine has scratches, scuffs, rain marks, dirt, my blood, deers blood, leaves stuck in the string grooves and stick tights in the silencers. I would get it refinished if they could leave all of that intact.  :D

I would like to someday get a textured type flat finish though.

Any refinisher I have dealt with will stretch 6 weeks to 60 in a heartbeat-just sayin'. If it is a vintage bow bowdoc is your man.

Two things.  First, I've beat the snot out of my bow.  It needs to be refinished.  I'll send it to the bowyer when I feel I can live without it for the required time.

Now, to your question.  Would I send your "new" '59 Kodiak to Bowdoc?  I got an original '50-something Kodiak Special left-hander when my wife's grandfather died.  The tip overlays had fallen off.  I packed it up and shipped it to Bowdoc.  Came back good as new.  Would I do it again?  Yes, without question.  He's good at what he does and he's trustworthy, in my experience.

Every scratch and dent has a story. To each their own but I don't want to erase those.

I wish my scratches and dings came from something cool like sliding down a shale slope chasing mt goats, or maybe fending off a grizzly bear.

Mine were just from dumb stuff.............walking into a barbed wire fence in the dark, sliding my bow down a set of concrete steps, dropping my first custom recurve on the corner of a file cabinet, jamming my bow tip into the chimney, slamming the trunk door on it, and letting it fall in the rocks.
