Anybody already post on this discovery in Norway?  OLD (i.e., 5400 years old) bows and arrows discovered in Norway as snow and ice melts.

So, I have a question. . .  if they were buried for near 5,000 years, and there is nearly a 2,000 year difference in age of the arrows and they are first now being uncovered because of warm conditions (melt), does that tell us that, 5,000 years ago the snow pack was where it is now, and that we have been in a cold spell for the last 5,000 years, and that the conditions around then were similar or even warmer just prior (to have had a snow pack with margins "where the gear was found" ) ?

ChuckC

Trad Whitetail

Bingo Chuck!  The earth has been far warmer and far colder in the past many times.  Its cyclical (despite what the self-appointed environmentalists tell us).  Cool find!

Mudd

ChuckC, It might not be wise to challenge those global warming folks with logical thinking....lol

You just got yourself an audit nxt year. Next you'll try to convince us that carbon dating is perfect and should not be questioned.

ChuckC has a point that has nothing to do with global warming.

I only know a little about carbon dating, but error and precision are two different things.  It's not surprising for estimates to be "off" the actual date by some hundreds of years.  However, commonly cited causes of error would not seem likely to produce 2000-year variation among items with a common origin, stored at the same place.  It's also noteable that the difference is being described as if it is believed to be actual; otherwise I would expect an approximate figure of around 4000 years.

ChuckC

Still. . . . with my questions aside (I am certain that my office is happy, I retired three months ago,  I always asked "too many questions" and don't tend to follow like a sheep).

Cool find.

How could the bow be 1600 years older than the arrows ?

ARCHER2

It belonged to his great, great, grampa.   :archer:    :dunno:

    maybe it was a great stand location. . .  for 2,000 years !

"How could bow be 1600 years older than arrows?"

Easy . . My bow is certainly older than every arrow I own due to loss and breakage of arrows.

Still . . .must have been a well-made bow!

Speaking of carbon dating  in a couple thousand years from now when they find a carbon arrow how old do you think it will be....... :)

Cool stuff. Stabow they will just read the numbers on them.   :)

Maybe 1600 years earlier "his people" made a crap load of arrows, and the guy that left his bow there, made it to use with the super cool old arrows. Arrows that had been stashed for use incase there was a zombie apocalypse or something.
