Need some advice on deer before the weekend..
« on: November 01, 2013, 10:09:00 AM »
I found spot in amongst grown up fields that are used for sticking pheasants on public land. The thing is this past week I have seen deer there 4 times and a buck last night. I figured out a little pinch point there. There are big big rubs there. But it's around those fields and not far from he parking areas. And it not a huge patch of woods. There is big woods around it but this is like a wood lot with game fields around it and a road on the one side.

I have another spot that the same buck has rubbed up but it's allot further walk. Which is great to get away from the guys hunting small game, and turkey opens on Saturday also. There going to be guys out and about for sure.

This spot is has briars and tangles in there. The other spot that father back has same type stuff. With small clear cuts near both spots.

Should I take my chances hunting that spot on sat since it's been so hot or hunt the areas a farther back in?
I hate to walk away from it on sat but idk if the other hunter bein in there will have em messed up. I could hunt it during the week comin up since I have some single vacation days to use.

Like I said I hate to leave deer to get away from guys, but also do want guys walking all around me and never See a deer either.  Idk what to do. This is the areas I spoke of in another post that has rubs on 6-10 in trees.

I also have to add last night I walked in there and deer was already there! 2 does in that Thick pinch point and a buck with them and I thought I heard another deer and it sounded like it was smashing brush with its antlers. Idk if one of the was hot and they has em pinned in there or what was going on.

This is second evening I hunted it and at 4 te deer was already in there. Maybe there there cause they want to be or it's because the other hunters have them
Pushed in there and try are laying low in that spot idk.

I
Mite luck out tonight and get one but if I don't I have to make and choice what to do.

It is amazing how many deer are killed within 150 yds. of deer camps.  I'd try the close spot first because deer pattern us as much as we pattern them.  If the close to the parking lot set doesn't produce, move further into the thick stuff.

I'd go to the further spot.  I hunt a lot of PA game lands, and have had a lot of "Elmer Fudds" mess up a good hunt.  The further back you go the less Fudds.  If it is a pheasant area you can bet there will be numerous hunters with dogs in the area at sun up. I'd go to the further spot and let the small game hunters play to my advantage and push or keep the deer in my area.  hunt the closer spot during the week.
An archer tries to find ways to shoot further more accurately, a bowhunter tries to get as close as possible to ensure his shot is accurate.

I agree with DJ, if you we're hunting it during the week I would hunt the closer spot first, but since it is a Saturday I would go long.

Funny you say that because this year has been a trial year and doing odd things. Mostly hunting close spots off roads and such. Well in his particular spot last night. I walked in and BOOM deer right there dropped to my knees. 2 doe in front of me 15 yards away a buck to my left 20 yards away. No shots too thick under brush.  And here comes 2 guys walking down road 30 yards from me at most. They wave I give a nod. They continue on down he road.  Hose deer stood there and never moved. They was talking as well.
They probably thought what was hat idiot doing. Little did they know I had 3 deer I front of me! And those deer stayed in that spot for over an hour messing around wih no shots. Exciting evening.

I would agree with above, hunt the back on the weekends.. Some times public land hunting you are hunting the hunters as well as the deer. The probly will push the deer to the back place. HOW EVER, never leave deer to find deer, and stick with you gut. If you have confidence in a place, and are seing game stick with it!

Redshaft, If your finding rubs on 6 to 10 in. trees, I'd find where that buck is hanging out. I dought a buck like that is near populous during the day. He's combing the does at night and retreating to his lair. Find the lair! Yes, for now, hunt the back spot.
