How do I fix this?
« on: November 11, 2013, 04:56:00 PM »

Had this happen today after an accidental dry fire    :banghead:   I'm fortunate this was the worst thing that happened. These underlays were put on my bow by BW to help with a tip that already had glass lifting when I bought the bow. I talked to John today and he said since this underlay was not the one covering the original damaged tip that I could try to glue it myself or send it in. I'm thinking about trying myself but me being stupid I forgot to ask him how they would even do that. I'm thinking maybe some 420 and small clamps? Should I try to sand old glue first? need some input. Thanks guys

I would go with a professional bowyer!
You don't want a bow to delaminate at full draw. There might be damage you don't see under that overlay from the dry fire

Good luck,

Frenchymanny, I talked to the guys at BW and they are professionals and didnt tell me anything other than what I said above. I'm almost to the point of not caring if the this bow de-laminates anyway ive had a bunch of issues with it from day one. I just want it to be shootable til it dies completely    :deadhorse:

There could be damage elsewhere on the bow,but I would use some sort of epoxy if I were going to try and fix the tip.

Move this thread over to the bench, you'll get more help.

If I were going to fix this I would completely remove the added overlay and re-do.

Sand off the glue left and look at the glass to see if its splintering, if not rough up with some 50 grit and glue on some new glass with smooth-on. Maybe 4 or 5 inches of .050 glass but do both ends or your limbs will be out of time from each other. Refile nock grooves sand edges and you'll be ready to go again.

Take some pics before you start so you can get back to where you started.

You'll only be out a few bucks and your time if it doesn't work. Be sure to check out the glass good, you really don't want it coming apart at full draw it could cost you more than your willing to loose( your eyes).

I think heartlandbowyer makes a good point.
I know money is an issue, always, but if I were going to fix it myself and then shoot it, I might want to consider wearing some safety glasses.
Personally, I would have a pro fix it or call it firewood, but that's your call.
Just don't want you to have more bad luck.
