Wish Me Luck
« on: November 17, 2013, 11:48:00 PM »
I made a good shot on a doe this evening, the last evening of my season, but I was not able to find her.  Complete Pass though, bright red blood, good blood spotches turning to sparse droplets and back to splotches.  Figure in the talc powder like dirt the blood was on and the thick pinions she ran to, and after three and a half hours of searching in the dark, I decided to find her in the morning, which shouldn't be an issue considering the factors of the shot.  I just hope something didn't find her first...

Looks like I grazed the underbelly in between the front two legs.  The blood was on the whole length of the arrow, but not alot of it.  One edge of my broadhead was somewhat sharp with very little blood and the other side was dull with plenty of blood.  The arrow was bent just 4 inches below the feathers, indicating she lunged upon initial impact.  This would have happened with a proper vital shot, but going right under the chest and making a cut in this quartering towards scenario would have yieled the same bent arrow.  The blood was ok at first but quickly dwindled in to very sparse 1/16 inch droplets.  It only took an hour to find the end of the blood, then I found where she bedded down.  I looked for new blood for 7 more hours.  I found the tracks, but no blood.  Not even a drop.  I went back to the good blood and notices every small splash was only found in between the left and right front tracks.  I think this doe will not die from my slightly low shot. Any thoughts?

I found the doe today.  Just like I thought, a superficial cut, probably with one blade, to the chest.  I got within 40 yards, looked with my binoculars and she trotted off, hopped a five foot fence and caught up with the rest of the heard. That was a great relief and it made my day knowing that I didn't make a kill shot on a deer only to lose it. Better luck next year I guess.

Diligence pays off , now at least you don't have to worry about what happened to her till next season .
