48#@28" Kanati, 1916 Easton Shaft tipped with a Wensel Woodsman broadhead. I killed quite a few critters with that setup.

I recently switched to Magnus Stinger broadheads but not for penetration issues. I just like the quality better.

EHK

47# @ 29 Super Kodiak + 3 blade snuffer = pass through.

Have yet to connect with my similar weight Osprey, but based on perceived speed alone, I would expect the same results.

mwosborn

45 - 50 lbs with any sharp broadhead = pass through on deer.......if they are hit in the right place and at the right angle.  Broadside behind the shoulder your most likely going to get a pass through.

My last 7 deer and a  bear were all shot with bows 50lbs and under using 3 bld Wensel Woodsman heads or Snuffers. All but 1 were chest hits and complete pass thrus.I used a longbow and a couple different recurves that draw between 46 and 50lbs@ 28''(I draw 27) and used CX Heritage 90 shafts. My only non pass thru was a poor shot on a quartering away buck that hit too far back but still went thru his ham and into his abdomen killing him.

47# Blackwidow PCH, 3555 GoldTip with a 175 VPA and 50 grain brass insert. Pass through no problem when you hit your mark!

jess stuart

Sierra Blanca Recurve 48# at 28" 1535 gold tip with Wensel Woodsman.  Antelope only so far but complete pass through.

tracker12

45# Bear Kodiak, Beeman ICS hunter 500 with 150 grain VPA three blade.  I have a friend with the same setup that also does well.  I am however stepping up to 200 grain VPA 3 blades.

I could almost say ditto on Jess Stuart's post - Almost.

I guess he calls my recurve he built a Sierra Blanca but I call it an RMR knock off(a very, very good one at that) Much nicer than the original RMR I have that Jess helped my find by the way.

Anyway - 56" 45@25  27" AD Trad Lites with Wensel Woodsmans on the business end.  Shot 4 deer so far with the bow and had complete, true pass throughs with the arrow in the ground on the other side on all but one.  That one it hit the off leg and got caught up on the fletch but pulled out after a couple bounds. These are 18-25 yard shots.

I once believed I needed a heavy bow to compensate for my short draw and shot 60-65 for years.  I now know different and don't plan to go back.

A well tuned arrow/bow combo is the main factor in how well an arrow will penetrate.  Get your arrows flying perfectly and a sharp broadhead will zip right thru.  I like paper tuning, but others prefer other methods.  They all work.

skychief

Old Grizzly (40@28") .   41-43# @ my draw length.   2013 aluminum and original Wensel Woodsman heads provided two holes each on a doe and a buck this year for me.

Stumpkiller

It has been my observation that an arrow which is flying well and straight (minimal disruption on the "paper test") will penetrate well.  An arrow that strikes at an angle or while "snaking and porpoising" will not penetrate very well.

Also has as much to do with tuning and flight as it does with bow poundage.  And, of course, sharp heads penetrate better than dull ones.

I shoot two-edged heads; but mostly because I know I can get, keep and return them to sharpness easily.  And when the shot is done I want a hole on both sides of the deer no matter what.

56 " shrew ch carbon 47# @ 29"
GT 5575 cut at 31" with a 125 gr VPA 3 blade up front
straight through rib cage both lungs traveled 10 yards after hit the doe  and buried itself in the dirt

hickstick

agree with all the above...been shooting mid fifties with WW heads  for a few years and have had full penetration if not complete pass through on every critter.  one buck stepped towards me just as I released (putting him at a slight quartering to position) and penetrated shoulder blade, lung, liver and out just being the diaphragm on off side.

I'm using regular parallel carbon shafts with 50 grain brass inserts, and 100 grain broadhead adaptors with 125gn glue on woodsman original heads.

bowfanatik

pass though on hog like this or just for White-tail

PerunH 60"

Shoot a lot and keep it simple

Mr.Magoo

51# Kanati
50# Horne's Brush Bow
51# Horne's Ridge Runner

Same arrow for these 3.  29" 35/55 Gold Tip Hunter, 145 and 160 Snuffer with 125 steel insert.

Double lung at calm deer equals pass-through.  Strange angles equals maybe pass-through.  Wired deer in process of turning inside-out when arrow arrives equals no pass-through.

Todd Cook

53# homemade Hill style londbow and 160 snuffers, file sharpened. Pure death.
