Starting traditional longbow
« on: September 11, 2007, 07:06:00 PM »
Hello,

I'm a new member introducing myself.

I used to do archery and bowhunting about 12 years ago, and I want to get back into it.

I'm looking for advice on two bows:
(1) Starting traditional longbow to get me back into shape, and that I can put a lot of pratice time on.  Nothing modern.  What makers and draw weight do you guys recomend?

(2) Hunting bow I can eventually get once I get back into practice.  I'm most interested in a traditional english style longbow, no arrow rest, etc.

Thanks a bunch for listening to a newby!

Welcome to the gang.   :campfire:

I don't know too much about makers of that kind of bow.Have you thought of making your own?I think there is a guy on here from the islands that makes bows.I can't seem to remember his name. You could do a search for Guava bows.

Welcome,
There are many guys here who can help you with either building or buying a selfbow, no shelf shooting off the hand sounds like a selfbow. These can either be American flatbow or English longbow or what ever you decide to design and build.
Clark is right, Manny (NorthShorelongbow, I think) makes some awsome Guava Longbows.
I think for a practice bow lighter is better 30 to 40 lb range. As your form improves and bow shooting muscles strengthen you can go to a heavyer hunting bow.
Mine is but one opinion.
Mark

no more than 45lbs to begin with, i would also recomend going with abow with a shelf, it is much easier to learn imho. montanas are great beginner bows or search the classifieds for a good deal.
hit um hard,
hit um fast,
but most of all
have fun

I think Manny is puterless right now.
Target archery is seeing how far away you can get and still hit the bull's eye. Bowhunting is seeing how close you can get and never miss your mark.

Thanks guys!

I'll see if I can get ahold of Manny.

My idea is to get a "basic" but good quality starting longbow thats a more conventional modern bow (with arrow rest, etc), with a reasonable draw weight (40 or so). Then as I progress and get back into the grove, then moving on to a full hunting weight, traditional self/English longbow.

Does that sound like a good plan?

Thanks!

Sounds like you have a Good Plan and there are Very Good Used LongBows to be had out there.
You can get a Good Bow and not Break the Bank. Then you will have Money left to buy arrows!
