UNREAL Close To My Prey!!!
« on: December 08, 2013, 11:06:00 PM »
I was doing some still hunting near the end of my hunt and as i entered this thicket, I saw a flash of movement to the left. So i knelt down and I saw that it was a coyote. All I had was my grunt tube so i did a fawn bleat distress and to my right i hear some crashing so I turned quick and there stands a doe not 3 yards from me. She has her nose down peaking through the brush head on. I could have reached out and touched her. She spooked and i let out another call. She turned around and came back in, VERY cautiously this time, to 5 yards broadside. It was again about 3.5 paces and she stood staring at me through the brush.

I let an arrow fly but she ducked my arrow. Goes to show you can't out beat their reflexes! It was BY FAR, the most exciting hunt  EVER. It would have been really cool to get her, but I have learned now to practice all distances. Its easy to miss that close! I Also did not know how effective that call can be!

Thought y'all would enjoy that! Getting close to the game is why I hunt Traditional!

if there was a coyote there and then a doe 3' away and the doe wouldn't leave, does anyone else think there might of been a fawn hiding nearby or maybe the coyote already had it?

even getting that close to a coyote on a still hunt is impressive,, me personally I would of shot the coyote, but awesome story and a heck of a heart pumper i'm sure 8^)

I would have shot the coyote and had my fingers tight on the string but it never gave me a shot. He kept on truckin' away from me as i did the distress call. He had no interest. He did stop at about 40 yards looking at me and continued on. I did look around where he was for a possible dead fawn….I hope he didn't get one. But a sure possibility he very well may have the way the doe was acting.

I had a similar nose-to-nose encounter with a pack of wild hogs one time, and I wondered if I had temporarily lost my mind! Having the head of a 300 pound hog at eye level from a few feet, looking like Cujo the Saint Bernard, will make you pine for a spare pair of drawers, haha!

I was kind of dumb then. probably best I didn't get a shot off.

that is a great encounter. I had a similar one with a cow elk my first year bow hunting and will always remember it.  I also learned that you can't hit an animal that is looking at you trying to understand what you are.  In that state of mind they have an explosive hair trigger.

The bleat call on my grunt tube is the best coyote call I have used. I have called in a few this year. They charge in, run a circle around me, get down wind and bust.  There are way too many coyotes where I hunt deer.  Last year i almost did not dare to use the bleat. I hunt as far from any gravel road as i can get. It was dry last year, that dust held those big kitty tracks very clearly. The game warden said that I was always telling him about lions that don't exist. He had to shoot a big one the other day that was getting brave and unfriendly. He was not killing fawns, he killed a full grown buck.
