kids archery- backstops
« on: December 12, 2013, 01:38:00 PM »
hi- i have been asked to run an archery programme at our local school for 9 to 14 year olds.
what might be the best option for an indoor backstop, i guess we need somthing that is still going to allow those light arrows to penetrate somewhat- but dont need any pass throughs. giong to need pretty big stops too-

any ideas for the best place to buy a dozen sets of gear- bows arrows tabs etc etc

in anticipation,
thank you
wayne

I would go with a sheet of material hung from a line.  Best way to stop arrows and cover a big area.  Someone will be a long who know what material is best.

After that, you can use a lot of stuff for a target.  large coffee bags stuffed with plastic and scrap fabrics strips are great and cheap to do.  I get my stuffing from old targets, rags, pillows and mattresses.  Bags from coffee distributors or someone that collects their bags.  I get bags for $1.00.

Not sure on best place to get the equipment in Canada.

I've seen the hanging cloth material made for stopping arrows at schools, but it's expensive.  I think you can find it on a search on the web, or maybe 3R

Bearpaw netting is a bit pricy but light weight and works great:

   Backstop netting

Carpet works too but it's pretty heavy. On the plus side you can get it as cheap as free. Three layers hung loosely would be more than enough to stop arrows from kids bows. I made a portable stop for my fence. It's 8'x12', three layers deep and it's about as heavy as a reasonably strong adult can handle.

Big Jim has these great bag targets:

An Old Area Rug is the Best I have Found! My Granddaughter tends to shoot OVER it sometimes, and I have a Few Holes in my Garage Siding. hahaha Lack of Concentration I think, but if she misses the Bag Target, it stops her Arrows Cold!!
