Asbell wool layering, what I tried this year

I've been wearing Teresa's wool for a while now. I've layered it many ways. One thing I wanted was a light insulating layer that would fit in my haversack. I unbuttoned the liner from a M65 field jacket and crammed it into my haversack. It worked extremely well. It looks like it would be noisy but with a layer of wool under it and one over it really isn't. Just put it on when you get to the stand. It would also be easy to add a few buttons to the jacket to button it in but I didn't need to.

I've also been committing another taboo by using some cotton. My father in-law was dairy farmer and worked outside in some very extreme conditions. He always wore a thermal sweatshirt. I have been using one of these as well. When kept dry these insulate well also. I had tried a high end "Modern" synthetic sweatshirt and it was one of the coldest garments I had ever worn, I gave it away.

Both of these can picked up for not much money and work well.

I also use Asbell wool. Have four pullovers and two jackets. The pullovers have the mackinaw hood with them. If it is cold I put on three long john tops a light long sleeve shirt probably cotton not sure. Then two layers of wool. Not balky and you keep warm

I have been having good luck with a filson vest under the Asbell pullover.  The filson vest has a much tighter weave and keeps the wind out.  Under the vest I wear a tee shirt and flannel shirt.  We don't have the extreme temperatures here in Northeast Oklahoma and I've been very comfortable.

Used my heavy weight wool pullover without a hood on Friday in a light rain with temperatures in the high 30's. Layered with a cold gear Under Armour loose fit training shirt and a Pindleton wool shirt. Stayed warm in what could have been a miserable evening on a tripod. Gotta love that Asbell wool and the Under Armour provides warmth and moisture wicking ability without added bulk.

I have been told by a friend that bought several items of the Asbell wool and he stated if you wear an XL to order a size bigger because they run a little small.

Do you Asbell owners find this true?

I am 5'9" and 220lbs and wear an XL. I can wear a L with thin to no layers on and get by but a tad tight in the shoulders and gut..... Gotta lay off those groceries before next year ! My son Mason is 6'4" and about 190 and he wears the L just fine since Asbells are long in the sleeve and tail. Sleeves are made to be able to roll up or down depending on your sleeve length and tails are very long to cover down to your waist or below. Timber Ghost is my favorite pattern and ours are zip ups with no hoods. Many thanks Theresa for a fine American Made garment..... a tip of the hat to a fine craftswoman......

Not at all. Mine are true to size with room for layering. He may feel this way because they are cut to avoid getting hit by a bow string.

I'm a borderline L or XL 6' 215 lbs and found the GFA XL to big a bit big.  Especially the sleeve length was a touch long.  I swapped the XL for a L and I think it's perfect.  Plenty of room for a layer or two underneath.  I'm not a fan of big and baggy clothes though.   You can't go wrong with their stuff.

From what you all answered the XL should work.

I think I will wait and see if they are at Kalamazoo this year and I will try them on before buying.

I layer my Asbell wool with a lot of sweaters. I have sweaters in a pretty wide range of thickness's. My favorite is a super thick Filson sweater. That under my Anorak (Blanket weight wool) is pretty darn cozy.

What are some of you wearing on your legs?

In warm weather I wear jeans or light fleece. When its cold I have KOM bibs and Silent Predator pants, I wear the pants more. I like the Ulfrotte wool and UA cold gear underwear.

I buy the camo PJ pants from wall mart and just put them on over my jeans.and add layers of long Johns under that
