A friend of mine shot one last weekend that shed one horn when it fell after the shot. We have had some nasty weather so I think there will be some shed by the first of the year.

I gots pics of a nice 8 point last Wednesday and Thursday he showed up with both sides gone. Was hanging a stand over in Ohio Sunday and walking back to truck I found a shed in a tree about 7 feet off of the ground, looks to have been up there for several years.

Wonder how many of these early shedding bucks are attributed to wounds? Would be interesting to know the facts...

I seen a "big doe" that was shot last week and it was really a buck that had shed both antlers.

D.J. Carr - Yeah, it happens here in Ohio year after year with our upcoming muzzleloader season...
macaster - Curious as to what acorns and antler shedding have in common?

I always believed when there is a lack of a major food source such as acorns in an area, that puts more stress on the deer in the colder months..which usually leads to some bucks dropping their head gear earlier...

Nutrition plays a part, but unless they are starving, doubt lack of acorns would contribute to early shedding.... Just my opinion from the things I've seen and read on the subject...

I've always noticed with low acorn crop early shedding, good acorns and they seem to keep them longer. That's in my neck of the woods. I keep cameras out all season and really notice the correlation between the acorn crop and antler sheds.

Any stress can't be good on them, no acorns can't help the situation.
