Is a .600 spine to weak?
« on: January 13, 2014, 08:05:00 PM »
Hi Guys,
My set up is:
ILF recurve 40# @ 26.5 my DL is 26.5
I was thinking about using goldtip velocity shafts in a .600 spine.

What do you think?
Thanks,
Dave

I have just been forced to a 42#@28 recurve by upcoming heart surgery, and I still NEED to shoot a  little bit every day!  So, this is what I've found. The lightest spine carbons I had were FMJ .500s.  At 25 yards they consistently hit 6-8" to the left(I'm RH).  An 1818 aluminum hits about 2" to the left.  These were already fletched and I did not take the time to bare shaft for a temporary need. Btw, both my shafts had 140 grain points and were 28.5" long.  Yes, a better job of tuning could be done with a little effort.  But, from this I would think a .600 or an 1816 aluminum might be just about right

It all depends on how much weight you are planning to hang on the front end and what length you want them to be

DDave
I set out a while ago to reduce my herd of 40 bows...And I am finally down to 42

Assuming the shelf is 3/16"s past center and utilizing a 12 strand FF string, then the following may likely get you in the ball park

GT Velocity 600...~27 7/16"s...250 grain point...~435 gns

GT Velocity 600...~28 1/8"s...225 grain point...~414 gns

GT Velocity 600...~28 7/8"s...200 grain point...~393 gns

Remember to validate before cutting shaft length.

Indeed, we need more info such as:
What string and how many strands
How much center cut is your bow
How much front load do you wanna use

For my 47 lbs recurves, which are center cut, and have an 8 strands SBD string, I use .600 with a front weight of 112 grains. They fly perfect
It don't mean a thing if it ain't got that string! [/i]

X2 what DDave said.
Yes, they will work with a given weigh point.

carbon arrows have very different static and dynamic spine stiffnesses.  this is very unlike woodies and alums.  most carbon spine charts are far too stiff, even if the arrow is heavily front loaded.  there's a reason why all carbon arrows of the same style and size are listed with a wide range of spine usage.  and most of those ranges are still far too dynamically stiff.

as an example, i use 29" to 29.5" beman 500 spine arrows exclusively for holding weights from 45# to 55#.  these arrows weigh between 470 and 585 grains, with none less than 25% foc.  they afford very good arrow flight for me.

sooooo ... yeah, for sure - a 600 spine carbon could easily work for a 40# holding weight and 27" in length.

Not a problem. Infact, in a less adjustable bow, it may be too stiff.
Don't know if you are after the velocity for speed, but we have the 1535 (.600) traditional blems available at this time.

thanks, bigjim

A full length GT1535 with a 125 gr point will be close. IMO. Cutting carbons stiffens them up fast..

Did you cut them or leave them full length?

I'm all over these!

I bought a couple dozen from jim last year and they work insanely well from low 30's to high 40's for my stalker and journeyman bows.

Start with 125. You may want to chop an inch or so off the shaft  so you don't have so much over hang.  Put a clothes pin on your shaft. Draw the bow.  The clothes pin will hit the riser as you anchor. Cut the shaft about an inch from that point.  Shortening the shaft will make it a bit stiffer. S you might need to go to 145gr.

I have a Shrew that draws 41# @my 28" and it shoots the 600 spine MFX Classics like darts...30" long with 125 gr points.  I would recommend not cutting and playing with point weight first.  I don't notice the extra length and like others mentioned, carbons stiffen up quick when cut and can get a little touchier to tune.

My sheepeater gets bullet hole tears through paper with full length .600 beaman mfx classics and standard insert with 125 tip. I draw 57 lbs at 29 inches. Good flight with broad heads. ?????? Can't explain it but it works. If I cut them an inch they are a bit stiff.
With this bow all recommended arrows were too stiff. I finally broke down and got some .600 carbons and it worked.
No set rules for all bows.
