Centaur or another Whip?
« on: January 19, 2014, 08:16:00 AM »
I am considering ordering another bow. I have a 64" Whip that I love but want to add a bow to the stable. I'm debating whether to get another Whip or try something else.

Centaur is a bow that intrigues me. Anyone shot both? Any comparisons would be appreciated.
Thanks!

Seth, Ive had multiple variations of both.  First let me say you can not go wrong with EITHER.

Speed wise lets just compare glass to glass, in that comparison they are very close.  The Centaur may be a touch faster, but again so close its a toss up (again this is glass/glass, if you consider the Chimera or Carbon Elite, its the Centaur for "speed").

While both quiet,  the WHIP is the quietest bow ive ever shot.  This isn't a knock on the Centaur as its also quiet,  but I have no idea how Dan gets that Whip so darn silent.

Fit/Finish is also a toss up. The Centaur has a flat almost textured finish,  the Whip has  flat but smoother finish.  Both do the job in protecting the bow and giving you a non glare finish.  Both bowyers get really nice wood and know how to put combos together.

The Centaur can be had in shorter lengths for the same draw length.  My 62" Whip feels about the same as the 60" Centaur for smoothness etc.

I prefer the grip on the Centaur, really like the contouring and way Jim peaks/contours the shelf.

You can get the Whip in "classic" trim which is a leather covered/simpler grip, or the standard which has a bit more contour and thumb rest.

The Whip has very fine, small tips, the Centaur tips, while also sleek are a bit more robust.

So im sure that wasn't much help!  Just my view in the differences between the bows.  For me its that Centaur grip that pushes it to the head of the pack of all hybrid longbows.

They are BOTH fantastic all around bows that are at the top of the hill.

Matt's comparison is spot on. Having shot your Whip, albeit briefly, and having owned a glass Centaur, I can tell you that my personal preference is the Centaur......I'd love mine back.
I'd say order the Centaur, if you like it great, if not I'll take it off your hands......you know my specs when you order.    :D

I put quietness over speed.  It would be the Whip for me hands down ...... same specs and grip.  IMO the closer your backup bow is to your primary the better

Dave, I was waiting for you to chime in! Somehow I knew that would be your answer!

Unfortunately, it will be just a little heavy for your liking!

You just can't get hurt with either one of those choices. Both Dan & Jim build very nice bows...

But.... There is another option you may want to consider before you pull the trigger. Something balanced and blueprinted, with a custom grip perhaps?..... Food for thought...Kirk

I've owned both, a 60" double carbon centaur and a 62" whip, both 50@28.
The centaur was a really nice bow and quick.
The whip though was quieter and I shot better with it.  I'd love to have a 64" t/d whip and that'd be my choice.

I ended up getting another whip.  Got a two piece with bocote for veneers and as you can imagine it came out spectacular.  I just liked the idea of having two identical bows and one having the ability to break down, yet still having the same string, brace height, arrows, etc.

Thanks guys. Beautiful bows Machino! I also considered a 2-piece. Do you notice any difference in feel between the two?
