thin lams

is it possible to find thin enough lams that you could put over fiberglass? for instance putting a wood veneer over glass limbs? if this is even possible, what would be some of the affects of this? any help is much appreciated

It would not work as the wood would then be put in compression or tension and would fail very quickly.

ah gotchya..im not a bowyer nor have any experience in building bows so i thought i would ask to see if its even possible. thank you for the help

I have a Border Griffon Gl. This bow has no glass, but has two carbon layers with wood lams over the top. It's quick and quiet and very smooth.

It works, I've done it. A lot more work than I thought it would be, was easier just to go with clear glass (unless you're using carbon as above).

how much is a lot more work? just wondering if is should go this route or a pair if skins instead...looking to camo it but want to do it natural based either with wood grains or skins (fake or real), with no paints.

Habu puts wood directly over carbon with no glass on it. Only thing I can think of to make it work is to cover the wood with epoxy when you cook it so that the epoxy completely impregnates the wood.

For me, it was considerably more work. It messed with the draw weight and sanding it was difficult (easy to sand through). By comparisons, skins are a breeze (real or cloth). I'd do skins long before trying the wood outer lams again if you're just looking for some natural camo. Besides, skins look awesome

thank you all for the advice. i think im gonna stick to skins. Hows the Border Griffon shoot? Ive never shot a bow with carbon fiber in it so im curious    it sure does look like a keeper

If I were buying one new, I'd take a Mohawk Sparrowhawk for quite a bit less money. I've owned both and sold the Sparrowhawk when I switched from right to left. Both great bows.

The answer is to put clear glass over the wood laminates so the beauty shows through.  But that's no solution for a after-market alteration.
