Here lately I've been wanting to get back into woodies (arrows), and the last batch I had was a simple white crown with alternate yellow and black cresting by the nock and at the base of the the feather. Unfortunately without a good cresting machine I hand crested them and they looked O.K. But I wanted to do something that could be done by hand but looked awesome!
I've scoured the forum and saw a few posts on the marbled arrows and someone had posted about an idea with the sponge stippling design but no pictures. So I figured I'd give it a shot and here are my results.
Please note that these are the old arrow shafts stained with Dark Walnut stain and cut to 10" with a 7" crown with the stipple, without nocks. I simply cut and used my old Douglas Fir arrows which were broken.
and here is the same shaft fletched with corresponding black hen feathers and yellow barred lead feather.
I had an old sponge and cut the corners off and used the sponge to stipple the black on.
I measured and taped off the 7" crown, and then applied two coats of white Krylon primer, and then put a top coat of an acrylic white, and then on top of that did a full coat of the acrylic yellow (letting all layers dry an hour in between coats of course!). After the yellow top coat dried, I then stippled the black.
I am quite pleased with the results and I think I might try this on my next batch of woodies. I am not sure if I want to try a cresting, or if I may leave it plainly stippled.
What do you guys think? Oh and post some pictures of some unique designs that you have done (marbled, stippled, etc.) that you've done by hand.
